Phillies' Christian McGowan: Undergoes Tommy John surgery
Rotowire
McGowan will miss the remainder of the season following Tommy John surgery, Jonathan Mayo of MLB.com reports.
It's the second Tommy John operation in McGowan's career, which means his absence will probably extend well beyond a year. Despite being used mostly as a starting pitcher, McGowan has not thrown more than 40.1 innings in a season since being taken in the seventh round of the 2021 First-Year Player Draft.

Phillies' Christian McGowan: Makes season debut
Rotowire
McGowan struck out four and allowed two earned runs on three hits and one walk over 3.2 innings Thursday for Double-A Reading after being reinstated from the development list.
McGowan didn't open the season as a member of Reading's roster, but that was likely just an organizational decision to manage the 24-year-old right-hander's workload. He missed the majority of the 2023 campaign while completing his recovery from April 2022 Tommy John surgery.

Phillies' Christian McGowan: On development list
Rotowire
McGowan is on the development list with Double-A Reading.
He only threw 25.2 innings in the minors last season -- his first year back from April 2022 Tommy John surgery. This move is likely a maneuver to manage McGowan's workload this season, as he could have been placed on the injured list if he were hurt.

Phillies' Christian McGowan: Activated, assigned to Single-A
Rotowire
High-A Jersey Shore reinstated McGowan (elbow) from its 60-day injured list Saturday and assigned him to Single-A Clearweater.
McGowan started for Clearweater in Saturday's game against Lakeland, covering two innings and striking out two while allowing four earned runs on five hits and two walks. The appearance with Clearwater marked his 2023 debut in full-season ball, after McGowan previously made two rehab starts in the rookie-level Florida Complex League as he worked his way back from April 2022 Tommy John surgery.
