Knehr has presumably had the procedure at some point over the ensuing four weeks and will now miss the rest of the 2023 season, and likely, the majority of the 2024 campaign. Knehr didn't factor into the decision in a 3-2 win over the Rockies during the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks over 3.2 innings. He struck out one and also hit two batters with pitches.
Making his first big-league start of the year, Knehr needed 82 pitches (48 strikes) to record only 11 outs before getting the hook, and his line could have been a lot worse as he exited with the bases loaded and two outs in the top of the fourth inning. Fortunately for the Padres, none of those runners came around to score. Knehr will likely head back to Triple-A El Paso with a 1.50 ERA, 0.75 WHIP and 8:2 K:BB through 12 MLB innings.

Knehr was one of two pitchers summoned from Triple-A El Paso in advance of the twin bill after fellow hurlers Mike Clevinger and Adrian Morejon were placed on the COVID-19-related injured list. Padres manager Bob Melvin indicated recently that he's pleased with Knehr's work this spring, per Bill Center of FriarWire. "I like Knehr's stuff. He throws strikes, has a good breaking ball. He's got late movement to it. He's got a lot of confidence in what he is doing now based on the fact that he was in the big leagues last year. I like his progress," Melvin stated.
Knehr got into one Cactus League game this spring, allowing one run (on a solo homer) over two innings while striking out three. However, he also worked on his pitching on the back fields and evidently impressed his manager. Knehr posted a 4.97 ERA, 1.48 WHIP and 20:20 K:BB across 29 innings for San Diego last season, and it's not clear if he'll have a spot on on the 2022 Opening Day roster.
