Velazquez allowed two runs on three hits and one walk across three innings during Tuesday's win over the Orioles. He did not register a strikeout or factor in the decision.
Velazquez isn't fully stretched out as a starter, so it essentially ended up being a bullpen day in place of David Price (elbow). The 30-year-old has a 4.03 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 19:10 K:BB through 22.1 innings this season.
Velazquez will start Tuesday against the Orioles, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports.
The Red Sox require at least a spot starter with David Price battling elbow tendinitis. Price doesn't expect to miss a long period, and the Red Sox have three off days in the next 11 days, so Velazquez might not be needed more than once. He has four starts under his belt this season but hasn't lasted longer than 3.1 innings in any appearance, so Tuesday's game may end up effectively being a bullpen day.
Velazquez allowed one run on two hits with three strikeouts across two innings in a no-decision against the Athletics on Wednesday.
Two days after making a relief appearance, the Red Sox once again turned to Velazquez to open this matchup against the Athletics. Four of his nine appearances this season have been starts, but Velazquez has yet to record more than 10 outs in any of them. That obviously limits his fantasy value. Velazquez is 0-2 with a 3.93 ERA, 1.42 WHIP and 18 strikeouts in 18.1 innings this season. He should continue to open games as long as Nathan Eovaldi (elbow) is on the shelf.
Velazquez (0-2) allowed three runs on three hits with five strikeouts and two walks across 3.1 innings during a loss in the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Tigers.
Red Sox manager Alex Cora said he expected Velazquez to record between 12 and 15 outs during this spot start. He didn't get that many, but he kept the game close enough for the Red Sox to be within a run in the eighth. Velazquez is 0-2 with a 3.94 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 15 strikeouts in 16 innings across seven appearances, including three starts this season. Cora confirmed Velazquez will become part of the Boston rotation with Nathan Eovaldi (elbow) facing an uncertain timeline to return, but Velazquez needs to build up his arm strength to last longer in games.
Manager Alex Cora said he expects Velazquez to record between 12 and 15 outs during the right-hander's scheduled start Tuesday against the Tigers in the second game of a doubleheader, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.
Filling in for the injured Nathan Eovaldi (elbow), Velazquez will draw his third start of the season, but just like the other two occasions, his pitch count will be monitored. Since Velazquez exited spring training prepared to fill a bullpen role, he isn't stretched out like Boston's other starters and has topped out at 57 pitches over his six appearances. He should be able to push a bit past that limit Tuesday, but with Cora expected to pull the plug after five innings, Velazquez may have a tough time factoring into the decision. Velazquez shouldn't face as strict limitations in his subsequent starts, as Cora already confirmed that the 30-year-old would become a full-time rotation member with Eovaldi facing an uncertain timeline to return.
