Dodgers' Josiah Gray: Shut down with shoulder issue
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Gray has been shut down from throwing due to a shoulder impingement, Do-Hyoung Park of reports.

The 23-year-old was scratched from his start for Triple-A Oklahoma City on Tuesday, and he'll now be shut down due to the shoulder issue. Gray likely will be sidelined into June since he'll need to build his arm back up once he resumes a throwing program.

Dodgers' Josiah Gray: Scratched from Triple-A start
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Gray was scratched minutes before his scheduled start Tuesday for Triple-A Oklahoma City for unclear reasons, Eric Stephen of reports. "When a starter, certainly a top prospect is scratched from a start, we've got to do some testing, and I don't know if we've done that yet," Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said.

Roberts was vague about the circumstances behind Gray's scratch, but the skipper seemed to hint that the 23-year-old right-hander was pulled off the start due to an injury or for COVID-19-related reasons rather than a potential call-up to the big leagues. For what it's worth, J.P. Hoornstra of the Los Angeles Daily News reports that Roberts admitted the Dodgers discussed calling up to provide reinforcement for a banged-up rotation, but Roberts noted that the Los Angeles would have to "shelve [that idea] for a little bit" in light of Gray being scratched. Expect a clearer update on Gray's situation to come within the next couple of days.

Dodgers' Josiah Gray: Promotion not imminent
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Gray will open the season at Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Brook Smith of reports that manager Dave Roberts eschewed the idea of Gray getting the call to replace Dustin May (Tommy John surgery). A team with the Dodgers' talent and expectations isn't going to alter the developmental plan for one of its top prospects based on a need at the big-league level. Tony Gonsolin (shoulder) and David Price (hamstring) are just as likely to get healthy in time to take the fifth starter's spot as Gray is to impress enough in the short term at Triple-A.

Dodgers' Josiah Gray: Invited to big-league camp
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Gray was invited to the Dodgers' big-league camp Tuesday, Eric Stephen of reports.

The Dodgers' depth means Gray isn't a favorite to win an Opening Day roster spot, but his arrival may not be too far off. He reached Double-A in 2019, recording a 2.75 ERA in 39.1 innings, and while the canceled minor-league season prevented him from continuing his climb last season, he was part of the Dodgers' roster pool and was even reportedly considered for a spot start at one point due to Alex Wood's shoulder troubles.

Dodgers' Josiah Gray: Named candidate to start Friday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Gray is an option to start Friday against Arizona, Ken Gurnick of reports.

The Dodgers are in need of a starter for Friday's road contest due to Alex Wood's (shoulder) placement on the 10-day injured list, and manager Dave Roberts mentioned Gray as one of four candidates to fill the role. Gray has yet to pitch beyond Double-A, but he has impressed while moving rapidly through three minor-league levels in his two seasons as a professional.

Dodgers' Josiah Gray: Tosses four innings
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Gray threw four innings in Thursday's intrasquad game, giving up one run on two hits and one walk while striking out four, Kyle Glaser of Baseball America reports.

He sat 94-96 mph with his fastball and landed some nice sliders for strikes against a lineup mostly populated by big leaguers. Gray is the Dodgers' second-best pitching prospect (behind Dustin May) and has a bright future in the majors. However, given the team's impressive pitching depth, Gray doesn't project to enter the rotation until sometime in 2021.

Dodgers' Josiah Gray: Gets summer camp invite
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Gray has been added to the Dodgers' 60-man player pool.

Gray impressed across three levels last season, finishing with a nine-game stretch at Double-A in which he compiled a 2.75 ERA and 1.13 WHIP along with a 41:11 K:BB across 39.1 innings. He is not on the 40-man roster, but given his status as one of the Dodgers' top pitching prospects and his rapid ascension through their system thus far, a major-league debut could be in the works for 2020.

Dodgers' Josiah Gray: Heads back to minors
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Gray was reassigned to minor-league camp Thursday, Ken Gurnick of reports.

Gray appeared in two Cactus League contests this spring, allowing two earned runs on three hits in 1.1 innings. He turned heads in the minor leagues last season, so it's not a reach to anticipate his major-league debut at some point in 2020 if he continues to pitch well.

Dodgers' Josiah Gray: Debuts with scoreless inning
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Gray gave up one hit in one inning in his first Cactus League outing against the Angels on Wednesday.

Gray allowed a bloop single to Angels top prospect Jo Adell but otherwise hurled a clean 24-pitch inning. Among the Dodgers' top pitching prospects, Gray is expected to begin the campaign in the minors, but he could conceivably work his way up to the big leagues at some point this season.

Dodgers' Josiah Gray: Invited to big-league camp
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Gray has received an invitation to the Dodgers' major-league spring training, Eric Stephen of reports.

Gray will get his feet wet against major-league hitters after impressing across three levels during his sophomore season in 2019, posting a combined 2.28 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 147:31 K:BB across 130 innings (25 starts). If he continues to impress in the minors, Gray could make his debut as a reliever/swingman as early as this summer.

Dodgers' Josiah Gray: Dominating in Double-A
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Gray pitched 4.1 innings against Amarillo on Tuesday, giving up one run on three hits and two walks while striking out six.

The 21-year-old earned Player of the Week honors in his second week with Tulsa and has not slowed down since, allowing four runs and compiling 10 strikeouts in 10.1 innings over three subsequent outings. Gray was traded from the Reds to the Dodgers as part of a package for Yasiel Puig in the offseason and has quickly cemented himself as a top-five prospect in the organization. He is 10-2 with a 2.10 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 136:27 K:BB in 124.1.2 innings across three minor-league levels this season.
