Russell Westbrook was rewarded for his historic season with the MVP award on Monday during the NBA's inaugural awards show, but afterward the talk soon shifted toward his future with the Oklahoma City Thunder.

The star point guard is under contract for next season, but has a player option for the 2018-19 season. In order to avoid a summer like they just had with Kevin Durant, the Thunder are reportedly set to offer Westbrook a massive five-year extension worth more than $200 million the second free agency begins on Saturday.

When asked about a possible extension after receiving the MVP award, Westbrook mostly avoided the question, saying he didn't want to think about it just yet

However, according to a report from ESPN's Royce Young, people around Westbrook believe he will be open to signing the extension once it's offered. Via ESPN:

Those close to Westbrook fully expect him to take the Thunder's offer, quite possibly at 12:01 a.m., and stabilize the franchise and present a clear road map. Westbrook signed an extension last summer and invoked the word "loyalty" for a reason. He wanted to make a statement -- a public declaration -- and take on the burden of leading the franchise forward.

He likes the existing roster and has a close relationship and confidence in Presti and Weaver. He has built a strong bond with head coach Billy Donovan. He knew what he signed for and, with the Thunder coming off a successful first post-Durant season and with pieces in place to improve the team, there are a lot of reasons to commit again.

This would obviously be the best-case scenario for the Thunder, as they would secure one of the games' best point guards for years to come, while also avoiding yet another chaotic summer in 2018.
