Zo's got flow: Power ranking the best lines in Lonzo Ball's new rap song
'ZO2' dropped a new single days after releasing his signature shoes
When you drop a pair of $495 sneakers and blow up the internet, what do you do for an encore?
Apparently you drop a rap single -- at least that's what Lonzo Ball did on Sunday, just days after he and his father, LaVar, made a lot of people very angry by releasing a signature line of sneakers with an exorbitant price tag. Lonzo, a former UCLA standout point guard expected to be selected in the top five of the NBA Draft, put his flow on display for the world to hear on SoundCloud and, as much as some probably want to hate it, it's really not bad.
Here are the top five lines from the "Free Smoke (Remix)" by ZO2 (Lonzo) and DC The Don.
5. I be ballin' like I'm sponsored
Hmmm, this one's interesting given the publicity that Lonzo and LaVar attracted for specifically choosing not to be sponsored by a major brand, instead opting to go with the self-made Big Baller Brand. Perhaps he's saying even though he's not sponsored by a familiar company like Nike or Under Armour, he's still going to play as well as guys that are. I'll buy it.
4. Felt the heat but I'm hotter, you a king I'm still your father
OK this has to be mentioned just in case it's a veiled shot at LeBron James, whose widely recognized nickname is "King James." Chances are Lonzo would never do such a thing, but given the bravado the Ball family has displayed thus far it has to be considered at least.
3. Just to hit y'all with another, I be ballin' with my brothers, had to do it for the culture
If we've learned anything from the "Fast and Furious" franchise, it's that family comes first. Lonzo clearly knows this, giving a shout out to younger brothers LiAngelo and LaMelo, who both played with him in high school. Both LiAngelo and LaMelo are also committed to follow in their brother's footsteps at UCLA. And of course, "had to do it for the culture" is a reference to the final line he utters in the video promoting his new shoes, "this one is for the culture." BRAND. CONSISTENCY.
2. Mama yo boy takin' off, Mike Jordan from the free throw
Again, have to give him credit for getting family in there, and you know Lonzo (whom his dad calls "the best player in the world") had to get in a Michael Jordan reference somehow. But let's pump the brakes here a bit. Lonzo's not exactly known for his athleticism, so dunking from the free throw line like Jordan is quite a stretch. Maybe he's actually talking about the time Jordan made a free throw with his eyes closed just to taunt a trash-talking Dikembe Mutombo. If that's the case, well played.
1. In a couple months, man, I'll be in a mansion, with my car clean and my diamonds dancin'
Accurate. No matter how you feel about him and his family, Lonzo Ball is going to be very rich, very soon. When he's taken near the top of June's NBA Draft, he'll be able to afford a mansion and as many dancing diamonds as he desires.
