Mavericks' Anthony Davis: Could miss months
Davis sustained ligament damage in his left hand and could miss a "number of months," ESPN's Shams Charania reports.
This is a brutal blow for Davis and for Dallas, as he was expected to be a prime trade deadline target. But now, depending on a second opinion and a possible need for surgery, Davis may be sidelined through the Feb. 5 trade deadline. More clarity on a timetable will likely be known in the coming days, but Davis' fantasy managers should be bracing for a lengthy absence. His absence will open up plenty of minutes in Dallas, and players such as P.J. Washington (ankle), Naji Marshall, Klay Thompson and Caleb Martin will be candidates to soak up some of them.

Mavericks' Anthony Davis: Fails to return

The severity of Davis' injury is not yet known after he checked out with 2:08 remaining in the fourth quarter in obvious pain. He can be considered day-to-day until the team has more information to share. Klay Thompson and Caleb Martin would be in line for more playing time if Davis is unable to go Saturday in Chicago.

Davis posted 26 points (9-15 FG, 0-2 3Pt, 8-9 FT), 12 rebounds, three assists and five blocks over 39 minutes during the Mavericks' 110-104 win over the Rockets on Saturday.

He made most of his presence felt defensively with five blocked shots, which is a season high and his most in a game since April 11. Over his last 10 outings, the star big man has averaged 19.3 points on 50.6 percent shooting, 11.3 rebounds, 2.7 assists, 1.4 blocks and 1.2 steals over 30.6 minutes per game.

Davis (thigh) is not listed on the injury report ahead of Thursday's game against the 76ers.

Per Ron Harrod Jr. of DLLS Sports, Davis is expected to play about 30-34 minutes, and his return means fewer minutes will be available for Daniel Gafford and Dwight Powell. Across the four games prior to his most recent injury, Davis averaged 26.3 points, 13.8 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 1.3 blocks and 1.0 steals over 35.5 minutes per game.
