Hernangomez has been suffering from some type of discomfort of late, although the team trainers expect him to continue playing through it, Mike Singer of The Denver Post reports.
Hernangomez hasn't been able to produce much of late, and the undisclosed injury could be a big reason why. Head coach Michael Malone indicated that if the issue got any worse, Hernangomez would be shut down until returning to health. His status will be worth monitoring moving forward.
Hernangomez will come off the bench Monday against Houston.
Hernangomez has been in a slump of late, and with both Gary Harris and Paul Millsap returning to the starting five, Hernangomez will head to a bench role. Torrey Craig will bump over to small forward with Hernangomez becoming a reserve.
Hernangomez's tied his career best in scoring while establishing a new high-water mark in rebounds during the standout effort. The 23-year-old also posted a season high in made threes along the way, bouncing back from a 2-for-12 slump from distance that had encompassed his last three games. Hernangomez's offensive production continues to fluctuate, but he's been reasonably consistent on the boards, hauling in at least five rebounds in seven of 10 December contests.
Hernangomez shook off the abdominal strain he entered the game with to essentially play close to a full complement of minutes, despite reports earlier in the day that he'd potentially be on a playing time restriction. The 23-year-old was able to bounce back nicely on the offensive end after posting only two points on 0-for-5 shooting Sunday against the Raptors. He continues to put together serviceable production while starting at small forward in place of Will Barton (abdomen), and he's now averaging a solid 12.3 points, 6.1 rebounds and 1.5 assists across eight December games.
Hernangomez (abdomen) is active and will presumably start in Tuesday's tilt against the Mavericks, but could see his minutes monitored Harrison Wind of BSNDenver.com reports.
Hernangomez could have a short leash if he suffers any setbacks with his abdomen injury. Malik Beasley and Trey Lyles could see some extra run if that is this case. As of now, he is the presumed starting small forward and taking something close to his usual workload.
