The Bengals made a surprise cut Sunday afternoon, waiving DE Derrick Harvey. The former eighth-overall selection was signed as a free agent this offseason.

Harvey was expected to compete for the backup DE position but didn't even make it to the first preseason game.

Marvin Lewis wouldn't comment on the move. It leaves the Bengals with five DEs. Lewis and DL coach Jay Hayes are confident others can move inside and out along with the LBs, who can drop down to DE to fill the depth chart.

“They all seem to be intelligent enough to handle those things,” Lewis said. “You have to have on a football team guys who can swing out and play a couple of different positions, obviously, when you get to 46 men on Sundays.”

Burfict's big play: Undrafted rookie LB Vontaze Burfict made his first big play of camp with an interception of Andy Dalton on a tipped ball.

Burfict, who entered camp maligned for a cataclysmic senior year where he slid down draft boards from first-round potential to undrafted, enjoyed a solid camp but this was his standout moment.

“You get an opportunity, let’s make sure we make the catch,” Lewis said. “He did a nice job. He’s out here just trying to make the football team and he’s got a great start.”

Green's bulk showing: WR A.J. Green did what he does Sunday. He caught a 49-yard jump ball, coming back for an underthrown pass, on a back-shoulder fade for a touchdown.

Although those are familiar plays for Green, his efficiency against bump-and-run coverage this camp looks different. Green added 10 pounds this offseason with the goal of fighting more efficiently through press coverage and not slowing in traffic.

The result has been noticeable.

“We all notice that when he throws people to the ground in bump-and-run,” offensive coordinator Jay Gruden said. “It wasn’t he got out-physicaled last year. He would just try to run around guys and give up good angles. Now, he'll keep it tighter and be more physical, much better. He’s really strong and can shed guys.”

The added strength draws the toughest test right in the first week against Jets CB Darrelle Revis.
