The Eagles stunned the NFL world last week when they decided to dump defensive end Jason Babin, and the Jaguars certainly surprised some folks when they snagged Babin off of waivers.

Jacksonville isn't going to mess around when it comes to its newest acquisition, though: Babin is already in the starting lineup for the Jaguars on Sunday, just days after joining the team.

Babin was expected to play, especially with the Jaguars picking up the remaining $1.69 million of his salary for 2012. Jags coach Mike Mularkey said this week he thinks Babin will "fit" what Jacksonville's doing.

"It's a good pickup," Mularkey said. "He's had a lot of success over the last three years, and we could use some help in that area. He'll fit what we're doing."

What Jacksonville's actually doing is not getting to the quarterback; they have 13 sacks this season, tied for last in the NFL with the Raiders. Babin wasn't playing as well as he had in the past during his 2012 campaign, but he still has 36.5 sacks over the past two-and-a-half seasons.

Babin's contract status going forward is slightly complicated: He's set to earn $4.225 million in 2013, but he's not owed any guaranteed money. After 2013, even though he's signed for additional years, Babin can walk away from Jacksonville based on the way the CBA is structured for vested veterans.

The Jaguars can obviously cut Babin, too. But if he performs at a high level for the balance on this season, it's quite likely they'll be interested in bringing him back, even if it's on a restructured contract.

Babin's chance to showcase how he can help the pathetic Jaguars pass rush begins Sunday against the Bills, who, according to Football Outsiders Adjusted Sack Rate, rank 10th in the NFL in pass protection.
