'Disappointed' Drew Lock feels like he was playing some of his best football in Broncos QB competition
Lock says he will support his teammate and do everything he can to make this team great

The Denver Broncos wrapped up one of the most highly-publicized quarterback battles this week, as head coach Vic Fangio named Teddy Bridgewater the starter over Drew Lock on Wednesday. The veteran seemingly wrapped up the close competition in Week 2 of the preseason against the Seattle Seahawks, as he completed 9 of 11 passes for 105 yards and a touchdown in Denver's 30-3 win.
While Bridgewater is ready for his new beginning, there's a disappointed young Lock on the other side. Once regarded as the franchise quarterback after going 4-1 as the starter in his rookie season a couple of years ago, it's possible his future is now elsewhere. After Bridgewater was declared the winner, Lock said that he was disappointed because he felt as though he was playing some of his best ball as of late.
"Obviously, it's disappointing," Lock said, via the Broncos' official website. "Every feeling that you could possibly have at this point, this day, this circumstance, you know they're running deep. I feel like at the time, I was playing some of the best football I've played since I've been in the league. I was more confident than I've ever been. Most of you guys think of me as a confident guy, but I was probably more confident than I've been since I've been in the league since this OTAs, this training camp, this preseason. This is such a special team, I was hoping and looking forward to being able to lead this team."
Lock found himself in this position due to a sophomore slump in the 2020 season, as he completed 57.3 percent of his passes for 2,933 yards with 16 touchdowns and 15 interceptions in 13 games played. He went just 4-9 as the starter, was inconsistent and turned the ball over at a high rate. Still, his potential as a gunslinger was on display at times during the preseason.
While disappointed, Lock is going to do what he can in practice and behind the scenes to help this team find success.
"But no finger-pointing, no negativity," said Lock. "It's going to be about me finding ways to still make this team great, whether that's in practice, working with Teddy, trying to find ways for him to get better. Whatever he needs me to do, that's pretty much my goal. Look in the mirror, see what I need to get better at. Figure out what it is to keep progressing, keep getting better. Not taking any steps back, just keep taking steps forward without taking some of the reps. It was disappointing, but I'm going to do everything I can for this team, for Teddy and keep the momentum going forward as far as my play goes."
