Elway has more terse words for Osweiler over planned White House no-show
You can tell Elway still isn't thrilled about the way free agency shook out
The split between Brock Osweiler and the Denver Broncos was not entirely amicable. Osweiler didn't talk to many teammates during free agency, and John Elway hasn't pulled any punches about the separation since.
After Osweiler's initial departure to Houston, Elway gave his old quarterback a good public ripping. He recently talked about how it was a "big surprise" to see his quarterbacks leave, letting people read between the lines on his disappointment. And now with Osweiler declining to visit the White House with the rest of the players from the Broncos team, Elway is (sort of) subtly making his feelings known.
"That's Brock's choice, so all the other guys from my understanding are going to be there, which will be great," Elway said via Mike Klis of 9 News in Denver. "We get everybody back together and celebrate the great season that we had last year, so it will be fun.''
He's by no means calling Osweiler a bad name for not showing up. Or even really dogging him.
But it's pretty apparent at this point Elway isn't thrilled with how things shook out this offseason, even though he played the role of top-notch poker player and refused to blink in the face of potentially starting Mark Sanchez (before landing Paxton Lynch in the draft).
When Osweiler left for Houston, everyone was stunned, because the Broncos drafted and developed him and he was set to take over for the defending Super Bowl champs on a team with a really good defense. Houston offered a big pile of money and Osweiler took it, although there may have been much more at play during the process.
It's possible Osweiler was upset about being benched for Peyton Manning down the stretch of a playoff run, and it's also possible he was upset about Manning being given the reverence of deciding when to make a call on retirement.
Whatever happened, it might make for a fun behind-the-scenes/oral history one day. And you can bet Elway won't pull any punches when it happens.
