Seems like a couple times of month we get another scary story of a former NFL player who is having memory problems and who, in turn, is suing the NFL. The latest player to emerge is former running back Stephen Davis, formerly of the Panthers and Redskins, who told the Washington Times about his eye-opening symptoms.

About three months ago, those symptoms compelled the 38-year-old Davis, a three-time Pro Bowler who led the league with 17 rushing touchdowns in 1999 and who retired after playing the 2006 season with the Rams, to visit a neurologist.

“Looking at the results and they’re not that good,” Davis told the Times. “I need to get special treatment, further treatment to try and get it taken care of.

“A lot of things scare me a whole lot, and it bothers me because there isn’t no telling what day I’ll forget everything.”

Lately, Davis has experienced short-term memory loss. He’s forgetting about the conversations he’s had with his wife only a few minutes earlier, he’s forgetting about his four kids’ activities, he’s forgetting to pay the bills. In fact, Davis said he’s begun to tape conversations so he can recall them for later.

Now, he’s joined the massive lawsuit against the NFL for not protecting players from head injuries. Davis said he doesn’t know how many concussions he sustained while playing -- but he guesses multiple head injuries every other game -- and the paper details the life he leads, including the fact he has a constant ringing in his ears, bad headaches and blurred vision.

“The coaches and doctors try to get you back on the field regardless of if you’re hurt or not hurt or have a concussion,” Davis said. “It’s more about getting you back on the field than making sure you’re OK.

“If you could put your hand on your nose, you were good to go back in.”

And Davis, like so many of his peers, is now suffering the consequences of those alleged actions.
