The football gods keep throwing obstacle after obstacle in Bill Belichick's path, and the Patriots coach continues to side step each potential landmine. On Friday, they threw yet another one at the Hoodie, which might force Belichick to pull off yet another miracle in a little more than a week.

According to WEEI, Patriots rookie quarterback Jacoby Brissett tore a ligament in his throwing thumb and will likely undergo surgery. However, CBS Sports NFL Insider Jason La Canfora reported that the injury isn't serious and may not require surgery.

Still, it could be enough to rule out Brissett out for the Patriots' Week 4 game against the Bills. Considering Tom Brady is still suspended and his backup, Jimmy Garoppolo, is still dealing with a reported sprained AC joint, the Patriots are facing an uncertain quarterback situation with one game to go until Brady's return.

There's a chance Garoppolo could be well enough to play by next Sunday -- after all, there were reports leading up to Thursday night's game that he might be able to play -- but the Patriots can't rely entirely on Garoppolo's potential recovery. Based on Rapoport's report, there's also a chance that Brissett could play. But again, the Patriots probably can't entirely rely on that possibility either.

They need a backup option. They're officially out of healthy quarterbacks.

Julian Edelman, who played quarterback at Kent State, served as the Patriots' emergency quarterback Thursday night, but Belichick probably isn't crazy enough to let Edelman serve as his QB1 next weekend. So, they might need to scour the free-agent market, which is currently filled with quarterbacks like Ryan Lindley and Josh Freeman.

Belichick better start praying for Garoppolo's swift recovery. He also might want to start winding up that right arm of his.

With that being said, the same rule still applies next weekend: Never bet against Bill Belichick.
