On Wednesday a jury found former Cowboys defensive tackle Josh Brent, who was driving a car when friend and former teammate Jerry Brown was killed over a year ago, guilty of intoxication manslaughter. On Friday Brent was given a 10-year suspended sentence along with probation and 180 days in jail.
Brent crashed a Suburban on a Dallas highway in December 2012, killing Brown in the process.
He was sentenced to 10 years in prison but was given a suspended sentence, which means 10 years of probation.
As a result of Texas law, Brent has to spend 180 days in jail because of the probation.
Brown's family and friends were apparently "relieved" with the sentence, because it means relatively little jail time for the former NFL player.
It's unclear if Brent will ever attempt to rejoin the NFL; he'll likely face a suspension from the league if he ever does. It's possible that his time spent in jail will cover any suspension he might face.
Brent would likely have to apply for reinstatement to the NFL after retiring in July.
Brent could've recieved up to 20 years in prison for his conviction.
