NFL free agency 2022: 49ers to sign former Chiefs cornerback Charvarius Ward to three-year deal, per report
Ward started 12 games for Kansas City last season

Former Kansas City Chiefs cornerback Charvarius Ward is set to take his talents to the Bay Area. According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, Ward has agreed to a three-year contract with the San Francisco 49ers. The deal is said to be worth up to $42 million and includes $26.7 million guaranteed.
The undrafted free agent out of Middle Tennessee originally came into the league with the Dallas Cowboys in 2018 but was traded to the Chiefs before the start of the regular season that year. Following his arrival in Kansas City, Ward blossomed into a key player in the club's secondary. In his four seasons with the Chiefs, he started in 43 of his 56 regular-season games played and totaled 222 tackles, 29 pass breakups, and four interceptions.
The 25-year-old also helped the Chiefs beat his new club in the 49ers in Super Bowl LIV.
At 6-feet-1, Ward can play press-man coverage and has been praised for his tackling ability. Last season, he allowed opposing quarterbacks to complete just 51.3% of their throws when targeting him and registered a passer rating of 79.4.
Adding a starting-caliber cornerback was high on the 49ers' offseason list and Ward now looks primed to start in a secondary that includes Emmanuel Moseley and second-year cornerback Ambry Thomas.
