  • 49ers' Charvarius Ward: Absent from injury report

Ward (groin) was not listed on San Francisco's injury report Wednesday, Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Ward returned to practice this past Sunday after sitting out with a groin injury over the previous couple of weeks, though he now appears to officially be passed this issue. The 26-year-old played a prominent role in the Chiefs secondary over the past four seasons, including 67 tackles, 10 passes defended and two interceptions over 13 games in 2021. Ward should now step into a starting role at cornerback opposite Emmanuel Moseley during the 49ers' Week 1 matchup against Chicago on Sunday.

  • 49ers' Charvarius Ward: Out at least a week

Ward (groin) will miss the next week at minimum with a soft tissue injury, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.

Both Ward and fellow starting cornerback Emmanuel Moseley (hamstring) are currently out of action as well as backup Jason Verrett (knee), but Ward could return in time for the final preseason game Aug. 25 against the Texans. In the meantime, Dontae Johnson, Ambry Thomas and Deommodore Lenoir got the bulk of work at the position during the 49ers' first preseason game against the Packers and will likely do so again against the Vikings next Saturday.

  • 49ers' Charvarius Ward: Sidelined with muscle strain

San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan said Wednesday that Ward is dealing with an undisclosed muscle strain and will be sidelined for a couple of weeks, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.

Ward signed a three-year, $42 million deal with the 49ers this offseason and is expected to be the starting cornerback opposite of Emmanuel Moseley (hamstring) to start the regular season.
