Peyton threw the ball backward ... and it ended poorly for the Broncos
Jonathan Freeny made a heads-up play and Jackson ran into the end zone for his first-ever playoff TD.

Late first quarter. AFC title game. Peyton Manning's Broncos have the ball in their own territory leading the Patriots 7-0. Peyton drops back to pass, and swings the ball out to Ronnie Hillman outside. The ball goes off Hillman's hands. Incomplete. Except maybe not.

Yeah. That's a lateral. Even Denver's running backs coach thought so.

So Bill Belichick threw his red challenge flag onto the field, Ed Hochuli went under the hood, and the Patriots got the ball on the Denver 22-yard line, thanks to a heads-up play from Jonathan Freeny (who recovered the lateral). Two plays later, Steven Jackson ran through the line for the first postseason touchdown of his storied career.

The Pats didn't tie the game at 7, though, because Stephen Gostkowski amazingly missed the second extra point of his career. Tough luck there, but at least they got on the board with the touchdown. The offense has otherwise struggled to move the ball throughout the game.
