Former Raiders defensive coordinator Jason Tarver became the first candidate to interview for the 49ers' defensive coordinator vacancy, a source told the San Francisco Chronicle on Friday. Matt Maiocco of Comcast SportsNet Bay Area recently reported that Tarver would be joining the 49ers' staff, after the hiring of Jim Tomsula. He'll be looking to replace Vic Fangio, who recently informed San Francisco he would not be back in 2015.
Tarver was an assistant with the 49ers from 2001-2010, which is where he has his ties with Tomsula. He was also the defensive coordinator at Stanford in 2011 before his three-year spell with Raiders. His unit ranked 21st in total defense in 2014, and never ranked inside the top-15 in total defense during his tenure in Oakland.
