Wilson and the Broncos will take their time in reaching a new deal

Russell Wilson has two years left on his current contract, which could create a timetable to get an extension done with the Denver Broncos. Neither party seems to be in any rush to work out a new deal, per Jeff Howe of The Athletic, as the Broncos and Wilson haven't started talks on an extension yet. 

Wilson has two years and $51 million left on a four-year, $140 million extension he signed back in 2019. He has a cap hit of $24 million in 2022 and $27 million in 2023, making his deal significantly less than the quarterbacks who have been getting paid this offseason. 

It is tied with Kirk Cousins for the seventh-highest average annual salary amongst quarterbacks. Aaron Rodgers ($50.3 million per year), Deshaun Watson ($46 million), and Matthew Stafford ($40 million) each received extensions over $40 million this offseason. Watson received $230 million guaranteed, the highest amount given to a player in NFL history. 

Rodgers received $150.665 million guaranteed this offseason while Stafford earned $120 million guaranteed. Wilson's $107 million guaranteed is the ninth-most guaranteed money to a quarterback in NFL history. 

One of four quarterbacks with a career passer rating over 100, Wilson has 113 career wins through his first 10 seasons in the league -- the most for any quarterback in NFL history (including playoffs). His 317 touchdown passes through 10 seasons trails only Peyton Manning (327) for the most in league history (including playoffs). 

Prior to his finger injury, Wilson led the NFL in yards per attempt (9.6), touchdown-to-interception ratio (10-1), and passer rating (125.3). He completed 64.8% of his passes for 3,113 yards with 25 touchdowns to six interceptions for a 103.1 passer rating in 2021 -- his final season with the Seattle Seahawks. 

Since Peyton Manning retired in 2016, the Broncos are 29th in the NFL in completion percentage (61%), 27th in pass yards per game (215.2), 31st in passing touchdowns (115), and 29th in passer rating (81.1). They haven't made the playoffs in any of those years. 

Getting an extension done with Wilson is on the docket for the Broncos, but it's paramount a deal is made before the price skyrockets. Based on the way quarterback deals are getting handed out, the Broncos may have already missed their opportunity.
