Pugh (back) received full medical clearance before the start of free agency, Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network reports.
This doesn't come as much surprise as the Cardinals likely wouldn't have agreed to the significant five-year, $45 million contract they reached with Pugh had the offensive lineman not been in good medical standing. While it's not certain if the 2013 first-rounder will fully participate in voluntary offseason workouts next month, there doesn't appear to be any reason Pugh won't be on the field for the start of training camp.
Pugh started eight games for the Giants in 2017 but finished the season on injured reserve with a nagging back injury. Rapoport reports the contract is worth up to $45 million, illustrating the Cardinals expect the 27-year-old to be an anchor point on their offensive line.
Plagued by back problems since early November, Pugh hadn't played in more than a month and wasn't showing the requisite progress to get back on the field for any of the Giants' final three games. On a fortunate note, Pugh won't require surgery to address the back issue, with doctors prescribing a regimen of rest and rehab for the offensive lineman following a second opinion. Pugh, the Giants' first-round pick in 2013, will become an unrestricted free agent for the first time in his career this offseason.
Pugh (back) has been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Cowboys. Per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Pugh is scheduled to visit a back specialist in California on Tuesday for a follow-up examination.
Pugh previously met with a doctor in California for consultation on the back injury, at which point it was decided surgery wouldn't be necessary. However, with Pugh having since failed to progress in his recovery as anticipated, it's looking more likely that he could require a procedure. If Pugh does go under the knife, it would almost certainly spell an end to his season.
Pugh (back) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Raiders.
Pugh was always viewed as a long shot to suit up Sunday, and his doubtful designation heading into the weekend only made it further unlikely that he'd play. Though he'll be sidelined for a third straight game, Pugh, who was on the field earlier Sunday to go through a workout, according to Tom Rock of Newsday, could be targeting a return to action Week 14 against the Cowboys.
