Bills' Tyler Matakevich: Re-ups with Buffalo
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

The Bills signed Matakevich to a one-year contract extension Monday. WGR 550 in Buffalo reports.

Matakevich only played 72 defensive snaps last season -- his first with the Bills after four seasons with the Steelers -- but he's one of the best special teamers in the league and Buffalo is happy to have him back. Matakevich led the Bills in special teams tackles (10) and snaps (71 percent) in 2020.

Steelers' Tyler Matakevich: New special teamer for Buffalo
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

The Bills have signed Matakevich to a two-year deal worth up to $7.15 million, Jay Skurski of The Buffalo News reports.

Plain and simple, this is a depth signing, but the Bills are on the lookout for high-motor guys with special teams skills and Matakevich fits that bill. He's averaged more than 300 special-teams snaps per season since joining the Steelers as a seventh-rounder out of Temple in 2016 while finishing in the top 10 in special-teams tackles three times. Matakevich hardly ever saw snaps on defense with Pittsburgh, but he's probably got enough ability to serve as the primary backup to one of Buffalo's starting linebackers.

Steelers' Tyler Matakevich: No tackles in loss
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Matakevich failed to record a tackle in Sunday's 28-10 loss to the Ravens.

Matakevich played almost exclusively on special teams and finishes the 2019 season with 18 tackles in 16 games played. An unrestricted free agent, his future with Pittsburgh is unclear.

Steelers' Tyler Matakevich: Leads team in tackles
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Matakevich had a team-high seven tackles (six solo) in the Steelers' 17-7 preseason win over the Chiefs on Saturday.

With T.J. Watt and Bud Dupree slated to start at outside linebacker, Matakevich is competing with Mark Barron, Devin Bush and Vince Williams for a starting inside linebacker spot. He is making a strong case to win the job, having recorded 11 tackles (10 solo) including a sack in two preseason games.

Steelers' Tyler Matakevich: Contributes on special teams
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Matakevich had one tackle (solo) during Sunday's 16-13 win over Cincinnati.

The third-year linebacker finished the 2018 season with 16 tackles in 16 games. He played just 54 defensive snaps, spending most of his time on special teams and has one year remaining on his current contract.

Steelers' Tyler Matakevich: Favored for starting ILB job
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Matakevich (shoulder) is healthy and now the frontrunner to be starting ILB for the Steelers after OTAs, reports.

The Steelers signed Jon Bostic, who had 97 tackles (57 solo) for the Colts last season, but Matakevich stole the show during offseason workouts. Matakevich played with an edge while showing off his football instincts, and that combination makes him the likely replacement for Ryan Shazier (spine). The 2016 seventh-round pick has never played more than 60 defensive snaps in a season, however, so he'll need a solid preseason to solidify his role.

Steelers' Tyler Matakevich: Hopes to be back for offseason workouts
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Matakevich (shoulder) hopes to be fully recovered in time for offseason workouts, Teresa Varley of the Steelers' official site reports.

Matakevich underwent surgery in January to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder. Even with Ryan Shazier (spine) ruled out for the entire 2018 season, a healthy Matakevich isn't considered a realistic candidate to step into the first-string lineup following the Steelers' signing of Jon Bostic to step in next to incumbent starter Vince Williams.

Steelers' Tyler Matakevich: Slated for shoulder surgery
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said that Matakevich will undergo shoulder surgery Wednesday, Ray Fittipaldo of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

Pittsburgh may not have a clear grasp on Matakevich's timetable until after the procedure is completed, but it will more than likely prevent the linebacker from being a full participant during the team's offseason program. The 25-year-old didn't see his responsibilities increase much in his second NFL season, as he appeared in 15 games but managed just 23 tackles (18 solo) in a backup role.

Steelers' Tyler Matakevich: Consistently unproductive this season
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Matakevich, who recorded two tackles (both solo) in the Week 17 win over the Browns, finished the 2017 season with 23 tackles (18 solo) in 15 games.

The second-year linebacker produced similar numbers as his rookie season, in which he recorded 20 tackles (16 solo) in 16 games, mostly on special teams play. Matakevich is young (25), cost-effective at just over $600,000 per year, and under contract until 2020, so he should be back with Pittsburgh next season, although he shouldn't be on anyone's fantasy radar.

Steelers' Tyler Matakevich: Full participant Thursday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Matakevich (shoulder) was a full participant in practice Thursday.

Matakevich missed Week 14's game due to a shoulder injury but was able to log 17 special team snaps last Sunday against the Patriots. With another week under his belt, look for the linebacker to potentially see some defensive snaps Monday night in Houston.

Steelers' Tyler Matakevich: Ruled out for Week 14
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Matakevich (shoulder) is listed as out for Sunday's game against the Ravens.

Matakevich, who injured his shoulder during the Steelers' Week 13 win over the Bengals, was unable to practice throughout the week and will be sidelined Sunday as a result. With Ryan Shazier (spine) also out, the Steelers will be forced to rely on Sean Spence and L.J. Fort at inside linebacker next to starter Vince Williams.

Steelers' Tyler Matakevich: Non-participant Thursday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Matakevich (shoulder) was unable to participate in Steelers' practice Thursday.

Matakevich saw an increased role in Monday's victory over the Bengals after Ryan Shazier (back) went down, and he recorded a season-high seven tackles before exiting with a shoulder injury. With Shazier presumably out for the remainder of the season, Matakevich could continue seeing a bigger role, but it will depend on his health. Sean Spence figures to be next in line should the 24-year-old ultimately be unable to go.

Steelers' Tyler Matakevich: Exits Monday with shoulder issue
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Matakevich was removed from Monday's 23-20 win over the Bengals with an unspecified shoulder injury.

Pressed into action at linebacker after Ryan Shazier was carted off the field early Monday with what was later diagnosed as a spinal contusion, Matakevich recorded a season-high seven tackles before departing with an injury of his own. While Shazier looks unlikely to be available for the Week 14 game against the Ravens and possibly beyond, Matakevich's health will take on greater significance. Expect the Steelers to provide an update on his status following their first practice of the week Wednesday.

Steelers' Tyler Matakevich: Two tackles in win
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Matakevich had two tackles (both solo) in Pittsburgh's 27-24 overtime win against Cleveland on Sunday.

The rookie linebacker played in all 16 regular season games, totaling 20 tackles (16 solo). He recorded a career-best nine tackles against Miami, who he'll face in the wild-card game, earlier this season.

Steelers' Tyler Matakevich: Leads team with nine tackles
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Matakevich had a team-high nine tackles (seven solo) in the Steelers' 30-15 loss to the Dolphins on Sunday.

The rookie linebacker gave a solid effort in what was otherwise a lackluster performance by Pittsburgh's defense. They failed to record a sack, and have just seven in six games this season, and also went without a turnover for the second time in four games.

Steelers' Tyler Matakevich: Seventh-round pick by Steelers
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

The Steelers selected Matakevich in the seventh round of the 2016 NFL Draft, 246th overall.

Matakevich lacks the athleticism normally seen in starting NFL linebackers, but he'll get a long look from the league anyway thanks to his standout production on a strong Temple defense. Matakevich finished the 2015 season with 138 tackles (15 for a loss) and 4.5 sacks.
