Hairston started at cornerback opposite Kenny Moore and had six total tackles in Sunday's loss to the Bengals.
Hairston wasn't terrible in coverage and was a productive tackler. With Indy's offense likely struggling to get off the field in most games, Hairston could be a decent source of tackles for a cornerback.
Hairston participated in Thursday's practice.
Hairston was able to fully participate in Thursday's practice after being limited earlier in the week. The 24-year-old spent much of the preseason nursing a hamstring injury, but he appears to be trending in the right direction for Sunday's season opener against the Bengals.
Pierre Desir was listed as a starter next to Kenny Moore, but it looks like Hairston has passed him in the preseason. However, it's not clear if Hairston will be ready to play Sunday against the Bengals.
Hairston played a much larger role than anticipated in 2017 due to numerous injuries to the Colts' secondary, as well as the departure of veteran Vontae Davis. The rookie fifth-round pick should battle for defensive snaps in training camp, with starting cornerbacks Pierre Desir (pectoral) and Rashaan Melvin (hand) both headed for free agency in 2018.
Hairston met with an independent neurologist Thursday, and it looks like he ultimately got cleared for Saturday's game. Barring any setbacks, look for him to assume his usual responsibilities at cornerback.
