Vegas Golden Knights score nine goals in their first NHL preseason game
Rookie Tyler Wong scores a hat trick to lift the NHL's newest team in its exhibition debut
The Vegas Golden Knights didn't roll out the big guns at Rogers Place in Vancouver on Sunday for their NHL preseason debut, opting to rest most of the veteran starters they acquired this summer, but that didn't stop hockey's newest team from stealing the spotlight.
With a hat trick from undrafted rookie Tyler Wong and some help from 2017 sixth overall draft pick Cody Glass, the Golden Knights dumped nine goals on the Vancouver Canucks, routing Travis Green's group in a 9-4 exhibition debut.
Preseason numbers are to be taken with a grain of salt, of course. This is Wong, Tomas Hyka, Tomas Nosek, Alex Tuch, Nick Suzuki and Paul Thompson we're talking about as Vegas' goal scorers against Vancouver -- not the James Neals and David Perrons of the Golden Knights' anticipated inaugural lineup.
That said, opening play with a five-goal victory is never a bad first impression. And neither is getting those Golden Knights jerseys on the ice for some live-game action.
