Capitals' Pheonix Copley: Placed on waivers
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Copley was placed on waivers Wednesday, Isabelle Khurshudyan of The Washington Post reports.

The Capitals will be in a salary cap crunch once Evgeny Kuznetsov (suspension) returns to the lineup, so Copley's $1.1 million cap hit is a luxury they can't afford at the moment. Moreover, management is likely curious to give top prospect Ilya Samsonov some work at the NHL level given that starter Braden Holtby is a pending unrestricted free agent likely headed for a big payday. The 27-year-old Copley was a serviceable backup in 2018-19, posting a 2.90 GAA and .905 save percentage behind a 16-7-3 record in 27 starts, so it's certainly possible another team will take a flyer on him.

Capitals' Pheonix Copley: Set to start Monday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Copley will start in net for Monday's preseason game versus the Blackhawks, JJ Regan of NBC Sports Washington reports.

Coach Todd Reirden said Copley will play the entire game. The 27-year-old backstop is expected to improve on last year's marks of a .905 save percentage and 2.90 GAA, especially since it's decision time in Washington with Braden Holtby playing in the final year of his five-year, $30.5 million contract.

Capitals' Pheonix Copley: Gets no help against Isles
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Copley made 21 saves in a 3-0 loss to the Islanders on Saturday. He allowed two goals.

Copley has a strong record -- he's 16-7-3 in 24 starts. But his 2.94 GAA and .904 save percentage aren't encouraging. Copley's record is influenced by team play, but the Caps couldn't muster much Saturday.

Capitals' Pheonix Copley: In for regular-season finale
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Copley will command the crease in Saturday's home game against the Islanders, Tom Gulitti of reports.

A particularly important nugget from Gulitti -- as relayed by head coach Todd Reirden -- is that Copley is going to play the full game. That's not always an apparent distinction for starting netminders at this time of year, and fantasy owners should consider exploiting the advantage in daily formats. Copley is 16-6-3 with a 2.94 GAA and .904 save percentage through 26 games; he'd previously only appeared in two contests over a pair of seasons with the Blues. The Capitals have already clinched the Metropolitan Division, while the Isles are only three points back.

Capitals' Pheonix Copley: Mauled by Panthers
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Copley turned aside 29 of 33 shots in Monday's 5-3 loss to the Panthers.

Florida's final goal came into an empty net. The Caps were asleep in all three zones for the first 40 minutes, sticking Copley with a 4-0 deficit heading into the third period, but he did hold down the fort while they staged a rally that eventually fell short. With the club nearly locked into the top spot in the Metropolitan Division -- it's three points up on the Islanders, with each team having two games left to play -- Copley could get one more start in order to snatch a bit of extra rest for Braden Holtby before the playoffs.

Copley will patrol the crease versus the Panthers on the road Monday.

The Capitals can secure a Metropolitan Division title Monday. If they do, it could open the door for Copley to get the nod for one of the last two games of the year as well. In 25 appearances this year, the Alaska native has gone 16-5-3 with one shutout and a 2.88 GAA. Once the playoffs start, Copley will be a permanent fixture on the Caps bench, though he has proven capable of taking the reins should starter Braden Holtby suffer an injury.

Capitals' Pheonix Copley: Sharp in road victory
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Copley allowed one goal on 21 shots faced during Tuesday's 4-1 road win over the Devils.

Copley has been one of the league's most dependable backups in his first full season in the big leagues with a 2.88 GAA and .906 save percentage behind a 16-5-3 record in 25 starts. The 26-year-old is a solid spot-start whenever he's called upon between the pipes.

Capitals' Pheonix Copley: Divisional clash on tap
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Copley will start in goal Tuesday against host New Jersey, Isabelle Khurshudyan of The Washington Post reports.

The Devils have been decimated by injuries up front and plan to send a rookie -- albeit a talented one -- in MacKenzie Blackwood between the pipes as Copley's adversary. Copley is an intriguing streaming option in daily formats due in large part to the immense win potential. He's gone 15-5-3 with a 2.97 GAA and .904 save percentage through 24 games this season.

Capitals' Pheonix Copley: Grounds Jets for fifth straight win
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Copley stopped 33 of 34 shots in Sunday's 3-1 win over the Jets.

The Caps' backup netminder has now won five straight starts, a stretch that dates back to Feb. 7, but his 2.92 GAA and .908 save percentage over that streak indicate it owes as much to the Washington offense as it does Copley's own performances. With Braden Holtby playing well at the moment, Copley's opportunities should remain limited.

Capitals' Pheonix Copley: Facing off against Jets
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Copley will tend the home twine in Sunday's game versus the Jets, Tom Gulitti of reports.

Despite Braden Holtby riding a five-game winning streak, Copley will make his first start in two weeks. Copley has won four straight outings, but he was just scraping by with an ugly .891 save percentage and 3.38 GAA in that span. He'll have an intense test in this matchup, as the Jets rank fifth in the league at 3.43 goals per game.

Capitals' Pheonix Copley: Hangs on for OT win
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Copley stopped 26 of 31 shots in Sunday's 6-5 overtime win over the Rangers.

The 27-year-old backstop extended his winning streak to four games with a lot of help from his teammates after Copley gave up the tying goal with only 31 seconds left on the clock in the third period. His 3.06 GAA and .901 save percentage are nothing special, but the Caps seem to be giving him plenty of goal support, making Copley a DFS target whenever Braden Holtby needs a breather.

Capitals' Pheonix Copley: Pegged for Sunday's start
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Copley will patrol the home crease in Sunday's game versus the Rangers, JJ Regan of NBC Sports Washington reports.

He marked the win column in each of his last three starts but posted mediocre numbers with a .908 save percentage and 2.94 GAA in that stretch. The Rangers are currently in sell mode, as they've already moved Mats Zuccarello and they'll be sitting center Kevin Hayes for precautionary measure. Those two combined for 79 points, so their absence will make Copley's time in the blue paint easier.

Capitals' Pheonix Copley: Fends off Kings for win
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Copley stopped 26 of 28 shots in a 3-2 win over the Kings on Monday.

Goals by forwards Alex Iafallo and Ilya Kovalchuk made things interesting for Copley in the third period, but he held on to earn his third straight win. Copley improved to 13-5-3 with a 2.97 GAA and a .904 save percentage across 22 appearances. Copley has been a solid backup this season, but expect Braden Holtby to face the Maple Leafs on Thursday.

Capitals' Pheonix Copley: Tending twine in Los Angeles
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Copley will draw the start against the Kings on Monday, Chris Kuc of The Athletic reports.

Copley has made two starts so far in February, going 2-0-0 while allowing seven goals on 70 shots. His 3.02 GAA and .903 save percentage on the season aren't much to get excited about, but a matchup against one of the league's weakest offenses could provide solid fantasy value.

Capitals' Pheonix Copley: Bailed out by offense in win
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Copley turned aside 29 of 33 shots in Monday's 6-4 win over the Kings.

The 27-year-old backup wasn't particularly sharp, but he still picked up his 12th win of the season thanks to Evgeny Kuznetsov and company. Copley has allowed three goals or more in five straight outings, leaving him with a mediocre 3.02 GAA and .903 save percentage.

Capitals' Pheonix Copley: Slated to start Monday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Copley is set to tend the twine at home against the Kings on Monday, JJ Regan of NBC Sports Washington reports.

Copley will take the first game of the Caps' back-to-back in order to save Braden Holtby for Tuesday's road tilt with Columbus. In 20 appearances this season, the 26-year-old Copley is 11-5-3 with one shutout, a 2.97 GAA and a .904 save percentage. Heading down the stretch, the youngster could see some additional starts in order to keep Holtby fresh for Washington's title defense.

Capitals' Pheonix Copley: Does enough to earn win
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Copley stopped 34 of 37 shots Thursday in a 4-3 overtime win over Colorado.

Copley needed this after Nashville and Chicago lit him up in his previous two appearances. This time, he did enough against the Avalanche's fearsome top line to give his team a chance to win, and the Capitals delivered for him. However, given how he's looked before Thursday, one game isn't enough to fully recommend Copley besides a daily league when you need someone cheap in goal.

Capitals' Pheonix Copley: Between pipes against Avs
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Copley will tend the twine versus Colorado at home Thursday, Isabelle Khurshudyan of The Washington Post reports.

Copley has underwhelmed in his recent appearances in goal, as he is 1-3-2 with a 3.84 GAA in his previous six outings. The Alaska native recently signed a three-year contract extension and will look to reward the club for its confidence in him by climbing out of his slump, though matching up against one of the best lines in hockey in Gabriel Landeskog, Nathan MacKinnon and Mikko Rantanen is a tall task for any netminder.

Capitals' Pheonix Copley: Secures contract extension
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Copley agreed to terms on a three-year, $3.3 million contract extension with Washington on Monday.

Copley was set to become an unrestricted free agent during the offseason, but has tied himself to the Caps for three additional years. The 27-year-old netminder is unlikely to become the full-time starter for Washington at any point, especially if the club is able to re-sign No. 1 Braden Holtby before his contract expires following the 2019-20 campaign. The deal likely will fill the exposure requirements for a potential Seattle expansion draft, which was almost certainly a factor in the team's decision.

Capitals' Pheonix Copley: Unimpressive in relief
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Copley replaced Braden Holtby early in the second period during Sunday's 8-5 loss to the Blackhawks, stopping 14 of 17 shots.

Washington's defense had no answer for the Chicago offense, so it didn't end up mattering much who was in net. Copley now has a 2.98 GAA and .903 save percentage on the season, similar numbers to Holtby, and his workload as the Caps' No. 2 goalie going forward will depend more on Holtby's availability and form than his own performance.
