  • Hurricanes' Martin Necas: Heading to Worlds

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(12/19/18) Necas will be loaned to the Czech Republic in order for him to participate in the World Junior Championship.

Necas cracked the Opening Night roster for the Hurricanes, but the crafty pivot was only afforded seven games before management decided he'd be better off developing with AHL Charlotte. Still looking slender at 6-foot-1 and 167 pounds, Necas hasn't been fazed by the minor-league competition, adding seven goals and 15 assists over 26 games for the Checkers, so he'll welcome a new challenge on the international stage.

Hurricanes' Martin Necas: Working through issues in AHL

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(11/26/18) Necas picked up a goal and an assist in AHL Charlotte's 3-1 win over Laval on Sunday.

It was one of Necas's better performances since being sent down by Carolina in the middle of October. While his overall numbers for Charlotte are decent (12 points in 17 games), the talented Czech is still struggling with consistency issues. The Hurricanes are smartly letting Necas marinate in the minors as opposed to giving him limited, fourth-line minutes in Carolina. It remains likely that Necas will get another shot at the NHL level at some point later in the season.

Hurricanes' Martin Necas: Will log plenty of minutes in AHL

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(10/21/18) Necas is expected to see significant ice time during his stint at AHL Charlotte, according to the Checkers' official site. "He wasn't getting a lot of ice time [with the Hurricanes] so Carolina wants him to come down and get more ice time here," said Checkers head coach Mike Vellucci. "Instead of five or six minutes he'll play close to 18 or 20 minutes to get used to the North American game."

Necas skated in seven straight games with the Canes prior to his demotion -- and even scored his first NHL goal Oct. 16 against the Lightning -- but he was only averaging 10 minutes per game and found himself sitting on the bench a lot. With Victor Rask out indefinitely with an injured hand, the Canes are thin down the middle, which means they can't afford to keep Necas in the minors indefinitely, so expect to see him recalled sooner as opposed to later. For the time being, AHL callup Clark Bishop will center the fourth line until Necas is deemed ready to return.

Hurricanes' Martin Necas: Bound for AHL Charlotte

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(10/17/18) Necas was reassigned to AHL Charlotte on Wednesday.

Necas does not lack hype as the 12th overall pick in the 2017 draft. The 6-foot-1, 185-pound center is a dynamic offensive producer who boasts tremendous speed, but fantasy owners are urged to be patient with the prospect, even though he found the back of the net for his first NHL goal against the Lightning on Tuesday. His next chance to play will be Friday, when the AHL club squares off against Hershey, the top developmental affiliate of the Capitals.

Hurricanes' Martin Necas: Reduced to fourth-line role

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(10/9/18) Necas was held pointless for the third time in four games Tuesday against the Rangers. He skated just 8:17 and spent most of the night centering the fourth line between Phil Di Giuseppe and Brock McGinn.

During the preseason, the 19-year-old Necas was being touted as someone who could center the Canes' second line after Victor Rask went down with a hand injury to start the season. While that may still happen, it's looking more and more unlikely as the team has shifted Sebastian Aho over from the wing to play in the No. 2 spot behind Jordan Staal. Given Necas' current checking-line role, his value is plummeting fast. Fantasy owners would be wise to seek other alternatives.
