The Ducks assigned Lundestrom to AHL San Diego on Friday.
San Diego is currently taking on Bakersfield in the second round of the AHL playoffs, so Lundestrom will join the Gulls' ranks for the remainder of their quest for the Calder Cup. The 2018 first-round pick was previously on loan to Lulea HF of the SHL, where he notched nine points in 17 appearances.
Lundestrom will head back to Sweden for the remainder of the 2018-19 campaign, Corey Pronman of The Athletic reports.
Lundestrom will rejoin Lulea HF, where he played the past three seasons. The 2018 first-round pick tallied just two helpers in 15 NHL games and has been toiling in the minors prior to the 2019 World Junior Championships. Look for the 19-year-old to push for a spot on the 23-man roster during training camp this fall.
Lundestrom will join Team Sweden at the 2019 World Junior Championships, Elliott Teaford of The Orange County Register reports.
Lundestrom has played in 12 games with AHL San Diego this season and is still looking for his first AHL goal. The center's participation with Team Sweden could be the spark he needs to start lighting the lamp in the minors. At this point, it seems unlikely the 19-year-old will spend any significant time in the NHL this year.
Lundestrom was sent down to AHL San Diego on Monday.
Lundestrom was selected with the No. 23 overall pick during the 2018 NHL Draft and has registered just two assists in 15 games to start his career. The 19-year-old is averaging just over 13 minutes of ice time per game, but his demotion to the AHL should give him an increased workload to continue his development.
Lundestrom has won a roster spot with the Ducks, Elliott Teaford of The Orange County Register reports.
Selected in the first round (23rd overall) of this year's draft, Lundestrom will scrap his initial plans to return to his native Sweden and join the Ducks right away. The 18-year-old should experience growing pains as a fill-in for Patrick Eaves (shoulder), but Lundestrom exhibited a sound two-way game in the Swedish Hockey League and one of his best traits is said to be his off-the-charts Hockey IQ.
