Are you familiar with the British rock band Muse? Are you aware of their neo-prog, Queen-meets-1970s-Genesis-meets-oh-let's-say-Judas Priest leanings?

If you are, then you already have a good idea what their new single "Survival," which was named the official anthem of the London Games Wednesday, sounds like. It sounds like Muse performing a song that could be named the official anthem of the Olympics.

If you aren't, well, you can listen right here. Just don't expect for it to necessarily be what you'd expect:

The take here: it's histrionic and silly, but it's not terrible, at least as far as histrionic and silly rock songs go. (Dig that guitar solo and closing crescendo.) But other than the lyrics (see below), it's hard to find a quality about it you'd also associate with the Olympics. There's not much we find histrionic and silly about, say, Lochte and Phelps coming down the final 25 meters in a dead heat.

What the song's missing is something that sounds like the joy of competition ... like, for instance, the joy embedded in one of the officially sanctioned songs of the 2010 World Cup, K'naan's adaptation of "Waving Flag":

Sports anthems are hard to create consciously -- there's a reason you can't watch a single Euro 2012 match without hearing "Seven Nation Army" half a dozen times, a song that has absolutely nothing to do with sports -- but an irresistible sing-along chorus is going to win out over crunching guitars and over-the-top vocals about "vengeance" and "fighting" every time.

So: not an awful try, London Games song selectors. But you should probably try again.

And just for the record, the "Survival" lyrics:

Race, life is race
And I am gonna win
Yes, I am gonna win
I'll light the fuse
And I'll never lose
And I choose to survive
Whatever it takes
You won't pull ahead
I'll keep up the pace
And I will reveal my strength to the whole human race
Yes, I am prepared to stay alive
I won't forgive
Vengeance is mine,
And I wont give in because I choose to thrive

And I am going to win

--- GUITAR SOLO---

Race, it's a race
And I'm gonna win, Yes I am gonna win
And I will light the fuse
And I'll never lose
And I choose to survive
Whatever it takes
You won't pull ahead
Because I'll keep up the pace
And I will reveal my strength to the whole human race
Yes I am going to win.

Fight! Fight! Fight! Fight!
Win! Win! Win! Win!
YES I'M GOING TO WIN.
