Roger Federer will not represent his country at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

The all-time leader in Grand Slam victories announced via his Facebook page that he and his doctors decided he needed more time to rehabilitate his surgically repaired knee.

The Swiss tennis star will miss the Olympics and the rest of the 2016 season, but hopes to continue his career for "another few years."

"It is tough to miss the rest of the year," he wrote. "However, the silver lining is that this experience has made me realize how lucky I have been throughout my career with very few injuries."

Currently the No. 3 player in the world, Federer was expected to contend for a medal in Rio. He suffered an unexpected upset at the hands of Milos Raonic in the Wimbledon semifinals earlier this month.

The 34-year-old is the all-time leader with 17 Grand Slam singles titles, and is one of eight men to capture the career Grand Slam.

"The love I have for tennis, the competition, tournaments and of course you, the fans remains intact," he wrote. "I am as motivated as ever and plan to put all my energy towards coming back strong, healthy and in shape to play attacking tennis in 2017."
