There's a very good chance that, if you're reading this post, you don't remember the 1942 Rose Bowl. Don't worry about it, because I can refresh your memory rather quickly.

The 1942 Rose Bowl was played between Oregon State and Duke with the Beavers winning 20-16. Now, while it may seem strange to you that Duke was playing in the Rose Bowl, you should know that in 1942, Oregon State -- as winner of the Pacific Conference -- was allowed to choose its opponent. It wanted to play Minnesota, which was ranked No. 1 at the time, but the Western Conference (which became the Big Ten) did not allow its teams to play in bowl games yet. So Oregon State chose Duke instead.

Oh, and the Rose Bowl wasn't played at the Rose Bowl in 1942. In fact, it wasn't even played in the state of California or on the west coast. Nope, it was played in Durham, North Carolina, home of the Duke Blue Devils.

Strange, yes? Well, it made sense at the time, as less than a month earlier, Japan had bombed Pearl Harbor entering the United States into World War II. Understandably, there was fear of another Japanese attack on the west coast, so the game was moved to the other side of the country.

To commemorate the 75th anniversary of this rare situation, Duke will wear special battleship grey helmets against Virginia Tech on Nov. 5, and I have to tell you, they're pretty sweet.
