Compton (knee) signed his restricted free agent tender with the Redskins on Monday, ESPN's John Keim reports.

Compton went undrafted out of Nebraska but has developed into a valued member of the Redskins defense through his first four seasons. The 27-year-old has posted at least 95 tackles in back-to-back campaigns, including a career-best 106 stops last year, which came despite him dealing with a sprained PCL toward the end of the season. However, after not needing surgery to repair that problem, Compton should now be raring to go as he faces competition from offseason signee Zach Brown for a starting inside linebacker position this term.

Compton (knee) was extended a restricted free agent tender by the Redskins on Wednesday, Mike Jones of The Washington Post reports.

The restricted free agent tender means that Compton will be free to negotiate with other franchises when the new league year begins on Thursday, but the Redskins will have the right to match any offer he receives. Compton had a career high 106 tackles and five passes defensed, including one interception while playing in 15 games in 2016.

Compton (knee - PCL) is progressing well from the knee injury he suffered in Week 14 against the Eagles. "I feel good about where I'll be come April," he said.

Compton missed just one game due to the sprained PCL and played through the injury in both of the Redskins' final two games. Offseason surgery wasn't necessary, however, so the Nebraska product has subscribed to a regimen of rest and rehab as a means for recovery. He has until mid-April to return to full strength.

Compton (knee) was active for Sunday's game against the Giants.
