San Diego's offense had the ball for 42:15 during the contest. That proved to be a major issue for Seattle. Due to the heat in San Diego, the Seahawks lost at least three defenders during the contest due to cramping and dehydation. All three managed to return, but it speaks to how difficult it was for the team to be out there so long.
The club also had no answer for Antonio Gates. Gates torched Seattle for 96 yards and three scores. He was Philip Rivers' go to target on third down, and was often able to convert. The Seahawks had a tough time disrupting Rivers' timing, sacking him just once. Seattle did force three fumbles, but couldn't come up with any of them. The last time Seattle gave up 30 points or more was Week 5 of last season.
Seattle will take on the Broncos Week 3.
"He did well," head coach Pete Carroll said. "He did a good job. He had a really good challenge route down the field and did a nice job the one time (Randall) Cobb got up on him and knocked the ball away — it was a beautiful play. He's looked really solid in practice and we really liked the kid coming in and he did a fantastic job of being ready to play in that game down the stretch and so we are really pleased. He will play for Jeremy at this time — we have no other alternatives that we think of at this point. But we are real happy with what he did."
Simon, who already missed Week 1 against the Packers Thursday, hopes to return in four weeks after recovering from the injury. Simon already had surgery on his feet in the offseason, which forced him to open camp on the PUP list.
Lane will be "down for a long time" as a result of the injury, though further details are not yet known at this point. He exited Thursday's game during the third quarter, after aggravating a pre-existing injury.
Maxwell picked off Aaron Rodgers in the third quarter, which led to a Seattle field goal. He finished the game with five total tackles (four solo) and defended two passes in a 36-16 victory. Going back to last year, he has five interceptions over his last five games.
