Celek agreed to a decrease in his 2017 base salary from $4 million to $3 million, CSN Philly reports.
The move opens up more cap space for the Eagles, and the 32-year-old remains with the only NFL team he has ever known. Although listed as the number-two tight end on the Eagles' depth chart, Celek was surpassed as a receiving option last season by third-year TE Trey Burton, who was targeted 60 times compared to Celek's 19. Barring injury to starter Zach Ertz, Celek's 2017 role should mostly come as a blocker.
Celek had one catch for nine yards on two targets in Sunday's 27-13 win over Dallas.
Celek hasn't seen much action this season as the third pass catching option at tight end for the Eagles, behind Zach Ertz and Trey Burton. In what was his 10th season, Celek finished with 14 catches on 19 targets for 155 yards and no touchdowns, all career lows.
Celek secured all three of his targets for 27 yards in Thursday's 24-19 win over the Giants.
The veteran tight end, once one of the NFL's better receiving options at the position, has seen a considerable downturn in recent seasons. However, he was a relevant part of the passing game Thursday, albeit in modest fashion. The three catches actually equaled a season high that Celek had established way back in Week 3, while the 27 yards served as his second-highest total in that category this season. Primarily a blocker and secondary target these days, Celek is tallying career lows in receptions (10) and yards (119) this season, and will finish a campaign without a score for the first time in his 10-year career if he's unable to get into the end zone against the Cowboys in the season finale on New Year's Day.
Celek caught his only target for five yards in Sunday's loss to the Ravens.
Both Zach Ertz and Trey Burton sit ahead of Celek on the pass-catching pecking order at tight end, making him fairly irrelevant in most fantasy formats.
Celek suffered a stringer in Week 14 but was able to play in Sunday's loss to the Ravens, catching his lone target for five yards. After that involvement, news that Celek is slated to suit up again Thursday comes as no surprise.
