Giants release Mathias Kiwanuka
by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com

The Giants released defensive end Mathias Kiwanuka on Tuesday, after nine years with the team.

The move will save the Giants $4.825 million--Kiwanuka's 2015 salary--against the cap.

Kiwanuka had 2.5 sacks in 11 games last season. He was one of three players remaining from the Giants 2007 Super Bowl team. Long snapper Zak D'Ossie and QB Eli Manning are the other two.

Coughlin: No comment on if Mathias Kiwanuka returns to Giants
by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com

Giants coach Tom Coughlin spoke with the media at the combine in Indianapolis, but he wasn't willing to commit to defensive end Mathias Kiwanuka

Kiwanuka's 2015 salary will be $4.775 million, but he would count $7.45 million against the salary cap. It's been widely speculated that the Giants would release him to save nearly $5 million against the cap.

When Coughlin was asked if there was a place for Kiwanuka on the Giants, he declined to comment.

Kiwanuka, who will be 32 next season, had a career-low 2.5 sacks in 11 games. His season was cut short by a knee injury.

Coughlin said he wasn't sure if Kiwanuka would return or if he'd even be able to play, following the knee surgery. He concluded by saying that a decision on the end hasn't been made yet.
