Philip Rivers a quality starter in Week 3
by Jamey Eisenberg | Senior Fantasy Writer

Chargers quarerback Philip Rivers is set up to play well in Week 3 at Buffalo.

Rivers made the Legion of Boom look vulnerable in Week 2 at home with 284 passing yards and three touchdowns and a surprising 11 carries for 17 yards against Seattle. We hope he can carry that momentum into Buffalo, and the Bills have already forced three interceptions in two games against Jay Cutler and Ryan Tannehill.

Rivers is clearly in sync with Antonio Gates, who scored all three touchdowns against the Seahawks. Once Keenan Allen gets going, which should happen this week, then Rivers could become a weekly Fantasy starter. It helps his cause that Ryan Mathews (knee) is out, meaning Rivers could be asked to throw more if the running game struggles.

For a complete list of Week 3 options, read my latest Start 'Em and Sit 'Em.

Philip Rivers dominates Seahawks secondary
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com

Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers dominated the Seattle secondary Week 2.

Rivers completed 28 of 37 attempts for 284 yards and three touchdowns. He also had 11 rushing attempts for 17 yards. Rivers had three things going for him throughout the game. He was able to stress the short passing game, which allowed the club to eat up the clock. San Diego held the ball for 42:15 minutes.

Having Antonio Gates helped, too. The veteran caught seven passes for 96 yards and three touchdowns. Gates was consistently Rivers' go to guy in the red zone and on third down.

Rivers fumbled twice during the contest, but the Chargers managed to recover the ball both times. He'll take on the Bills Week 3.

Philip Rivers dinks and dunks in MNF loss
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com

Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers averaged 6.6 yards per attempt in Monday's 18-17 loss at Arizona. He completed 21 of 36 throws but for only 238 yards with one touchdown and one interception.

Rivers' longest completion went 34 yards to lumbering tight end Antonio Gates. Rivers overthrew Malcom Floyd on a second-quarter bomb, though they later hooked up for a 6-yard touchdown. With corner Patrick Peterson blanketing Keenan Allen (5 catches, 37 yards), Rivers had few big-play chances.

San Diego's receivers didn't give Rivers much help. Eddie Royal stopped short on a crossing route, leading to Jerraud Powers' interception right before halftime. Gates and Allen had critical drops.

It won't get any easier for Rivers, who faces the Seahawks in Week 2.

Philip Rivers will struggle to duplicate 2013 numbers
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com

Last year's No. 4 Fantasy quarterback, Philip Rivers opens the season against a Cardinals defense not nearly as ferocious as last year's unit. Arizona lost defensive tackle Darnell Dockett to a torn ACL, as well as linebackers Karlos Dansby (free agency) and Daryl Washington (suspension). Safety Tyrann Mathieu and two defensive linemen are questionable with injuries.

Rivers thrived in his first year under coach Mike McCoy, throwing for 4,478 yards and 32 touchdowns with 11 interceptions. McCoy said he expects Rivers to play better in 2014. Rivers was razor sharp in the preseason, completing 15 of 18 passes for 166 yards and a touchdown.

But the fear with Rivers stems from San Diego's scheme. McCoy wants to run the ball more than he wants to air it out. San Diego added running back Donald Brown to a backfield that already includes Ryan Mathews and Danny Woodhead.

The Chargers are going to ride that three-headed monster, making the efficient Rivers a low-end QB1 at best.

Philip Rivers razor sharp in final tuneup
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com

Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers looked razor sharp Sunday against the 49ers, completing 9 of 10 throws for 85 yards and a touchdown. Rivers found tight end Antonio Gates wide open for a 10-yard score late in the first quarter.

Rivers did not play from that point on, and won't see the field again until San Diego's regular-season opener Sept. 8 at Arizona.
