Billy Baron leaving URI a few months after dad's firing
Billy Baron gave it a shot after his dad was fired at Rhode Island, but after a few months he's decided it's best for him and his well-being if he moves on somewhere else.
Billy Baron just couldn't do it anymore.
He thought he could make it work under new Rhode Island coach Dan Hurley, but it became took difficult -- each time he walked into Hurley's office, into the locker room and even often stepping foot on campus.
"It was just too tough emotionally," Baron said.
So Baron, who began his career at Virginia and played half a season for his father at URI, has decided to leave the program.
Baron will likely receive a waiver to play immediately -- as Trey Zeiger did when transferred to Pittsburgh from Central Michigan following the firing of his father.
Baron averaged 13 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.6 assists in 20 games last season.
"I really like Coach Hurley a lot," Baron said. "He's been great to me and I felt like I was going to play a huge role in the team this season, but my heart just wasn't into it. It was too difficult for me to stay here."
Now Baron will likely choose between playing for his father, who took the head coach at Cansius, and see what other programs show interest.
"It'll be a tough decision," Baron said. "My dad has some really good players over there and obviously I'd still like to play for him. I'm not sure what I want to do yet. It's been an emotional last month or so for me."
