California coach Mike Montgomery has decided to retire, a source confirmed to CBSSports.com on Monday.
A formal announcment is expected soon.
Montgomery, 67, just completed his sixth season at California after previous stops at Stanford, Montana and with the Golden State Warriors. The Bears were 21-14 this season, 10-8 in the Pac-12. They lost to SMU in the NIT quarterfinals.
This development, also reported by InsideBayArea.com, means two Pac-12 jobs are now open. The other is Washington State, where Ken Bone was fired earlier this year.
