SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – It was clear early in Archbishop Mitty’s (Calif.) game against Lone Peak (Utah) that the final score wouldn’t be very close. Mitty was overmatched against one of the top teams in the country.

But that didn’t stop Aaron Gordon from playing all 32 minutes, going for 27 points and 12 rebounds – all while leading and encouraging his teammates despite the 81-46 loss.

“That’s just his makeup,” Archbishop Mitty coach Tim Kennedy said. “He’s a total competitor, goes 100 percent all the time. He just has that drive.”

Gordon had multiple highlight-reel dunks and constantly attacked the basket and made plays, both in transition and in the half-court. He defended multiple positions and was aggressive at both ends. While he didn’t have much help on the offensive end, he managed to go 13-for-25 from the field.

“He’s been going through that this season, facing double- and triple-teams,” Kennedy said. “Something he’s battled through. He’s so versatile with the way he gets his points.”

In terms of recruiting, the 6-foot-9 forward is down to three schools: Arizona, Washington and Kentucky. The two Pac-12 schools were deemed the favorites for most of the past couple of years, but Kentucky has really come on strong lately and is squarely in the mix for his services.

While Gordon isn’t ready to make a commitment, Kennedy said the process hasn’t been a distraction.

“He’s mature beyond his years,” Kennedy said. “He cut it down to three pretty quickly, so it hasn’t been a crazy circus with 100 coaches calling. He’s been in control of it the entire time.”

Gordon is No. 7 in the 247 Sports Composite rankings.

Williams-Goss will bring closing ability to Washington

Nigel Williams-Goss doesn’t blow you away with shooting ability or quickness, but the Washington-bound point guard showed on Monday why the Huskies are so excited to have him.

He put on one of the best fourth-quarter performances I’ve seen in recent memory, scoring 18 points in the final eight minutes to bring Findlay Prep (Nev.) all the way back from an 11-point deficit against No. 1 Montverde Academy (Fla.).

He capped off a tremendous effort with the game-winning 3-pointer in the final seconds.

“He’s not that fast, but nobody can keep him in front of them. He doesn’t shoot it that well, but he just makes shots,” Findlay coach Todd Simon said. “He’s having as good a senior year as anyone that’s come through our program. And we’re smart enough to say, just take us there. I think he’s as good a guard as you’ll find in the country.”

In the past three years, Washington is 13-14 in games decided by five points or fewer – the presence of Williams-Goss in the closing minutes could be a boost.

“He’s got a million wins,” said Simon, who added that Williams-Goss’ way of getting points won’t change in college. “I think that translates to all levels.”
