Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith announced on Tuesday that freshman forward Mickey Mitchell has not yet been cleared by the NCAA to play in games this season.

“Freshman forward Mickey Mitchell has not been cleared to compete for the Ohio State men's basketball team by the NCAA Eligibility Center," Smith said. "He is eligible to practice but not compete until the issue is resolved.”

Mitchell is a 6-7 forward that was considered by most recruiting services to be a four-star player in the Class of 2015. He was a bit more highly regarded before suffering injuries in his sophomore and junior seasons to a knee and his back, but 247Sports had him as the No. 119 player in the country according to their final composite rankings.

If healthy, Mitchell could be one of the most fun players to watch at some point during his college basketball career. He plays an entertaining style of basketball predicated on tremendous vision and passing ability.

There is no indication currently as to what exactly the NCAA is investigating in regards to Mitchell.
