  • Knicks' Obi Toppin: Starting Saturday

Toppin will start Saturday's preseason game against the Wizards, Fred Katz of The Athletic reports.

With Julius Randle (personal) out, Toppin will get the nod at power forward. During the first preseason game, he totaled 10 points and five rebounds in 14 minutes.

  • Knicks' Obi Toppin: Impressive in Summer League play

Toppin was named to the 2021 All-Summer League First Team on Wednesday.

The second-year lottery pick looked like a man among boys at times in Las Vegas, where he led all players in minutes (35.1 per game) while posting 21.0 points, 8.3 rebounds, 1.3 assists, 1.3 steals and 0.8 blocks per game. Toppin drilled 2.0 threes per game at a 34.3 percent clip and shot 88.9 percent at the line through six appearances. The former Dayton star did not make a major impact as a rookie last season, but he'll vie for a larger role off the bench in 2021-22. That said, the Knicks brought back the majority of their roster from last season while adding Evan Fournier and Dwayne Bacon on the wing, so Toppin's path to earning significant minutes may be a difficult one.

  • Knicks' Obi Toppin: Scores 13 in 19 minutes

Toppin had 13 points (5-8 FG, 1-3 3Pt, 2-2 FT) and three rebounds in Sunday's Game 4 loss to the Hawks.

The rookie played a playoff-high 19 minutes, and he was on the floor for the entire fourth quarter, which the Knicks entered down 17 points. Toppin's 13 points were also a playoff career high, and Sunday marked the first time since Mar. 11 that he scored in double figures. Coach Tom Thibodeau appears to be gaining some trust in Toppin, though he'll likely continue to play a relatively minor role for as long as the Knicks can manage to extend the series.

  • Knicks' Obi Toppin: Plays 15 minutes in loss

Toppin had eight points (3-4 FG, 2-3 3Pt), one rebound, one assist, two steals and two blocks in Friday's loss to Phoenix.

Toppin has now played double-digit minutes in six straight games, and while he's not much of a fantasy consideration, he flashed some all-around potential Friday night. The two blocks and steals were encouraging, though it's worth noting that Toppin had only one block in his previous 21 games combined.

  • Knicks' Obi Toppin: Scores nine points

Toppin totaled nine points (4-5 FG, 0-1 3PT, 1-1 FT), two rebounds and one steal in 11 minutes during Friday's 99-86 loss to the Mavericks.

Toppin's nine points were the most he has scored since March 11 when he had 10 against the Bucks. Even though the rookie hasn't seen a bump in minutes, the uptick in offensive production could be related to Kevin Knox falling out of the rotation. While the splash of offensive production is nice, the 2020 eighth-overall pick is still struggling to impact the game in other ways. Toppin only has five assists, three steals and one block in his last 13 games.

  • Knicks' Obi Toppin: Losing playing time

Toppin is averaging 11.6 minutes, 2.9 points, 1.9 rebounds, 0.5 assists, 0.4 steals and 0.2 blocks in 17 games since the All-Star break.

Toppin is averaging just 11.9 minutes per game during his rookie year. But the 2020 eighth-overall pick has failed to reach double-digit minutes in six of his last seven games, with the Knicks pushing for a postseason berth. Under coach Tom Thibodeau's scheme, Toppin is losing minutes to Julius Randle and RJ Barrett, who both have played 40-plus minutes in their last five games. Toppin has been held scoreless in his last six games, but Thursday, he found a way to affect the game other than scoring, recording two steals, one rebound, one assist and one block. Toppin will have to continue this well-rounded play if he wants to work his way into a larger role in the rotation.

  • Knicks' Obi Toppin: Logs career-best 26 minutes

Toppin had seven points (3-7 FG, 1-3 3Pt), four rebounds, three assists and one steal during Tuesday's loss to San Antonio.

Toppin logged 26 minutes of action in this one, which marked a new career best, as the rookie also reached the seven-point mark offensively for the second time over the past five games. Prior to Tuesday's outing, Toppin was averaging 4.6 points and 2.4 rebounds.

  • Knicks' Obi Toppin: Scores three off bench

Toppin finished with three points (1-2 FG, 1-1 3PT) and two rebounds in 11 minutes Monday against the Hawks.

Toppin wasn't much of a factor in this one, attempting just two shots from the field. He did manage to knock down his long attempt from downtown, accounting for all three of his points on the night. The first-round pick has finished in double figures in just two of 19 contests this season.

  • Knicks' Obi Toppin: Scores seven against Miami

Toppin logged seven points (3-6 FG, 1-3 3Pt), four rebounds and one steal over 10 minutes in Sunday's 109-103 loss to the Heat.

Toppin continues to garner fairly minimal playing time off the bench, but he recorded his highest scoring total since Jan. 17 during Sunday's loss. Over the last five games, the rookie is averaging 4.0 points and 1.8 rebounds over 10.2 minutes per contest.

  • Knicks' Obi Toppin: Quiet off bench in loss

Toppin had just two points (0-2 FG, 0-2 3PT, 2-2 FT) and one rebound in 13 minutes Sunday against the Clippers.

The rookie missed a chunk of time from late-December to mid-January, and he's struggled to gain more than a minor bench role since returning to action. Over the last seven games, Toppin has played between 12 and 15 minutes, rendering him mostly irrelevant in fantasy.

  • Knicks' Obi Toppin: Drops 12 on Boston

Toppin finished with 12 points (5-8 FG, 2-4 3Pt), five boards, one block and one steal in 17 minutes of a 105-75 win against the Celtics on Sunday.

Toppin recorded his first double-digit scoring outing of the season in his team's big win. The rookie was dealing with a calf injury to start the season, but his strong showing in a dominant win makes it appear he's fully recovered. He'll face the Magic on Monday.

  • Knicks' Obi Toppin: Available, may not play

Toppin (calf) is available for Wednesday's game against the Nets but coach Tom Thibodeau would not commit to saying the rookie will play, Danny Small of ESNY reports.

The rookie has worked his way back from a strained calf, but coach Thibodeau noted that Toppin is going to go "step by step," and if "there is an opportunity" to play him, he'll see the court. This is good news for fantasy managers who have held onto Toppin in season-long leagues and may be able to activate him soon. In DFS, he's an extremely risky play Wednesday.

  • Knicks' Obi Toppin: Brief appearance in return

Toppin (calf) played 57 seconds off the bench in Wednesday's loss to the Nets, recording no statistics during his time on the court.

While Toppin was removed from the injury report following a 10-game absence, head coach Tom Thibodeau said pregame that he wasn't sure if the rookie would immediately return to the rotation, given his lack of recent practice time. Toppin entered the game during the first half but was quickly removed, with Mike Vorkunov of The Athletic relaying that Thibodeau that the matchups weren't ideal for the forward to play a longer stretch of action. With a day off before Friday's game in Cleveland, Toppin should have a chance to log some practice time, and he'll likely move back into a larger role off the bench behind starting power forward Julius Randle.

  • Knicks' Obi Toppin: Likely to return Wednesday

The Knicks upgraded Toppin (calf) to probable for Wednesday's game against the Nets.

According to Ian Begley of SportsNet New York, Toppin hadn't been cleared to resume taking contact as of Friday while recovering from his right calf strain, but the rookie has evidently made considerable progress in recent days. The Knicks' decision to list him as probable implies that Toppin is likely to be available off the bench Wednesday, but expect head coach Tom Thibodeau to manage the 22-year-old's minutes carefully coming back from the injury. Toppin made one appearance for the Knicks before tweaking his calf, playing 24 minutes and posting nine points, three rebounds, two blocks and one assist in the team's season-opening loss to the Pacers on Dec. 23.

  • Knicks' Obi Toppin: Not cleared for contact

Coach Tom Thibodeau said Toppin (calf) is progressing but has yet to be cleared for contact work, Stefan Bondy of the New York Daily News reports.

The 22-year-old hasn't seen game action since the season opener due to right calf straight, and he doesn't appear particularly close to a return. Toppin remains without an official timeline for his return, though it's safe to rule him out for the immediate future.
