Michigan at Ohio State score: Buckeyes' comeback win in 2OT is an instant classic
No. 2 Ohio State keeps its College Football Playoff hopes alive by knocking off No. 3 Michigan
Even if it doesn't get a chance to play for the Big Ten title, No. 2 Ohio State made its best case for the College Football Playoff with a dramatic 30-27 double-overtime win against Michigan.
The Buckeyes had to overcome two missed field goals (including a chip-shot attempt from 20 yards) and continue fighting through a second quarter that was totally dominated by the Wolverines. Things finally turned Ohio State's way in the second half as coach Urban Meyer put the ball in the hands of quarterback J.T. Barrett and halfback Curtis Samuel to go win the game.
Barrett was Ohio State's leading rusher with 125 yards on 30 carries, but it was Samuel who dominated the end of the game with a hard-fought 8-yard catch-and-run followed by a 15-yard touchdown run in double overtime to score the game-winning touchdown. Maybe it was on that first play, which started on the right side of the field and included about 45 yards of running for just eight yards gained, that Samuel started to see cracks in Michigan's rock-solid defense.
The game was back in Barrett's hands in double overtime on fourth down as he charged forward, getting stopped at the end of his run by the back side of his own teammate, freshman tight end A.J. Alexander. A review showed that the spot was correct and Barrett had reached the 15-yard line to pick up the first down.

If Samuel saw cracks in Michigan's defense, he found them again on the other side of the field with the game-winning score.

So what now? Ohio State needs Michigan State to beat Penn State in order to be the Big Ten East representative in the Big Ten title game because of their head-to-head loss to the Nittany Lions earlier this year. If Penn State wins, it goes to the Big Ten title game and Ohio State has to hope for an at-large spot in the four-team playoff, which gives preference to conference champions.
Michigan falls out of playoff contention with the loss, as a two-loss team without a conference title won't have much of a fight. Jim Harbaugh and the Wolverines are certain to be a pick for another New Years' Six bowl game, just not one that will decide the national championship.
