Head-to-Head points has long been known as the format that favors starting pitchers, but never have I seen it taken to the extreme it was in this draft, with late-rounders like Tanner Houck and Jon Gray being pushed into the middle rounds and bottom-feeders like Drew Smyly and Dane Dunning being drafted at all.

That's out of just 252 picks overall. It was insane.

The most curious part is that the zigging left no opportunity to zag. As with quicksand, our struggle only sank us deeper into the muck. Once it became clear there would be nothing left behind on waivers, we dug in all the more. Nobody could afford to get left out at the most critical position. I contributed to it myself with Nestor Cortes in Round 18 and Mitch Keller in Round 21, two pitchers who I had yet to see drafted in a league so shallow.

What's crazy is I think it was exactly the right thing to do. It's the playbook I've long recommend for this scoring format, loading up on starting pitcher depth to maximize two-start options and breakout possibilities. I'm just not used to everybody doing it.

Hitter needs can always be addressed on the waiver wire. Only 108 are even started in this format, nine for each of the 12 teams. Moreover, there comes a point in the hitter pool where distinctions are mostly lost. With no categories to juggle and so few lineup spots to fill, what's the point in choosing anymore?

I've often advocated in this format for drafting a bare bones outfield, trusting yourself to fill in the gaps with whomever emerges on the waiver wire. In theory, you could do it with an entire nine-man lineup, though I'm not willing to recommend it. In a league where everyone loads his bench with starting pitchers, though, as happened in this particular draft, it seems all the more possible.

For all the starting pitcher talk, I should point out that the genuine difference-makers within the hitter ranks should still go for a premium, particularly since there are so precious few. And indeed, nine of the 12 first-rounders and 20 of the first 30 players taken in this draft were hitters. Even through the middle of Round 6, I'd say that most of the hitters offered a clear advantage over the mess that followed.

Of course, the same could be said for the pitchers drafted in that range, so finding the right balance is tricky. I opted for four pitchers and two hitters with my first six picks, and I'm not sure my pitching stands out enough to have been worth it. In retrospect, three and three may have been the better way to go.
