Cardinals' Giovanny Gallegos: Jettisoned by St. Louis

The Cardinals designated Gallegos for assignment Sunday.
Since being acquired from the Yankees in July 2018, Gallegos had served as one of the Cardinals' top late-inning relievers, but he's dropped further down the bullpen hierarchy following an up-and-down 2023 season. Gallegos' struggles had worsened in 2024, with the right-hander turning in a 6.53 ERA and 1.65 WHIP over 20.2 innings. The 32-year-old had performed better since returning from the injured list June 21 (2.31 ERA, 1.11 WHIP in 11.2 innings), but teams may still be hesitant to put in a waiver claim on a declining reliever, who is pitching on a $5.75 million salary for 2024. If Gallegos isn't claimed off waivers or traded, he would likely elect free agency and look to join a club at a more team-friendly price.
