Stout (back) rejected an outright assignment to Triple-A Indianapolis and elected free agency Thursday, Rob Biertempfel of The Athletic reports.

Stout was acquired by the Pirates from the Cubs in June but won't remain with Pittsburgh through the offseason. He appeared in 20 games between the two clubs and had a 5.64 ERA, 1.84 WHIP and 25:16 K:BB across 22.1 innings, and he finished the season on the injured list with lower-back discomfort.
