Fantasy Baseball Dynasty Rankings: Top 30 catchers
Catchers typically don't have as a high of a peak or as long of a shelf life, so how should we value them in Dynasty leagues?

What's the earliest you'd take a catcher right now in a re-draft league? Maybe like Round 5?
Granted, in past years, it's been higher. But with as many high-end bats have emerged at safer positions and as high-demand as high-end starting pitchers have become, you can no longer afford a detour in the name of scarcity.
That goes double for catchers in a Dynasty league. They're lower impact and higher risk than basically every position other than relief pitcher. They don't play as much or produce as big. They tend to peak late and decline early. And frankly, they're easy enough to replace on the fly in one-catcher leagues. As low-impact as catchers are, most Fantasy teams roster only the bare minimum.
Fittingly, not a single catcher earns a five from me for "present value," and only one, Orioles prospect Adley Rutschman, earns a five for "future value." Those are two of the three factors I weigh most heavily when putting together these rankings:
- Present value: What a player is expected to be in 2020
- Future value: What his peak looks like and how much peak he has left
- Confidence rating: How confident I am in him meeting his immediate and long-term value
Each factor is measured on a 1-to-5 score, with five being the best, and a player's ranking is primarily determined by adding the scores. Ties typically go to the younger player, but personal preference plays a role as well. The distinctions become less evident further down the list, so at some point subjectivity has to reign.
