Jenkins had a rough outing Saturday, giving up three runs (two earned) on two hits while walking four and striking out none in 1.1 innings of work.
This was a huge step backward after his first appearance on Monday, when he threw two clean innings. Jenkins is an athletic pitcher, but the results just haven't been there for the 24-year-old (5.88 ERA in 52 big-league innings last season). He is being given a chance to compete for a rotation spot this spring, but he can't have more outings like Saturday's if he wants to keep his slim chances alive. A move to the bullpen could be an option, but he would only gain some NL-only value if he cracks the Padres' rotation.
