Red Sox's Craig Kimbrel: Set for surgery, placed on DL
Kimbrel (knee) has been diagnosed with a left medial meniscus tear and will undergo surgery Monday, Tim Britton of the Providence Journal reports. He's been placed on the DL and is expected to miss 3-to-6 weeks.
Kimbrel sustained the injury while running prior to Friday's game, and he'll now miss at least the rest of the month, and possibly a portion of August. The 3-to-6-week timetable is far from exact, but a more concrete estimate should be available following Monday's procedure. Boston has not announced who will take over as the interim closer, but Brad Zielger, who was acquired via trade late Friday night, could be the top option.
