Fantasy Basketball Waiver Wire: Jonathon Simmons, Roy Hibbert worth the leap of faith?
Fast starters can be enticing. Chris Towers takes a look at the most-added players in Fantasy hoops to see who might be real.
Start & Sit: Top 150 for Week 2
The first few weeks of the Fantasy season are always some of the most active on the waiver wire in Fantasy. When those late-round fliers you took a shot on don't look good in the first few games, everyone is going to go chase the quick starters from around the league, hoping to find the next Hassan Whiteside -- or at least Will Barton or something.
There were four players added in at least 10 percent of CBSSports.com leagues over the past week, so I figured I would take a closer look at each to see whether they are worth the investment, before moving on to the players you should be targeting this week.
Believe The Hype?
Simmons looked awesome in the Spurs' season opener, a nationally televised game against the Warriors, so there's little surprise he is the most-added player in CBSSports.com leagues. Of course, after dropping 20 points with three 3-pointers in the opener, he followed that up with 16 points and no 3-pointers in the next two games combined, which looks a bit more like what we should expect moving forward. Simmons might continue to be the primary beneficiary of Danny Green's absence, but he'll have just low-end appeal for the two weeks or so Green still needs to recover. I'm not buying the hype.
The Nets are the new 76ers, in that anyone with a pulse and a jumper has the potential to provide serious Fantasy value on the waiver wire. Hamilton showcased at least the latter of those skills in the opener, nailing three 3-pointers en route to a 19-point, 10 rebound effort. Minutes shouldn't be hard to come by in Brooklyn, with the Nets going to great pains to limit Brook Lopez's minutes in the early going. Hamilton wasn't nearly as productive in the next two games for Brooklyn, a good reminder that he probably isn't going to emerge as a reliable Fantasy starter this season. Still, he should have a nice combination of minutes and shots, and is at least worth owning in category-based leagues.
There might be some confirmation bias for me here, because I included Hibbert on my list of preseason sleepers. He was pretty well useless in Los Angeles last season, even on defense, providing just 1.4 blocks per game, hardly enough to make up for the rest of his shortcomings. He looked better in the opener, swatting five shots and actually finishing at the rim on offense, but a knee issue forced him out after just four minutes in the second game, and sidelined him for the third. Hibbert had his knee drained before the opener, so this is clearly an issue to keep an eye on. If healthy, he could have some appeal in category-based leagues, but that looks like a real question at this point.
Baldwin reminded us why he was a lottery pick in the opener, as he stuffed the statsheet with seven points, five rebounds, six assists, three steals, and even three blocks in 25 minutes of action. He was quite a bit less impressive in the second game, but should continue to see minutes in Memphis with Mike Conley seeing limited minutes on back-to-backs. Baldwin is worth stashing in deeper leagues as Conley insurance.
Add These Guys
If we know one thing about Warren, it's that he's going to score. He might not do anything else of note, but he has put up 44 in the first two games of the season, while serving as the Suns' starting small forward. He has added just two assists in those two games -- the 14 combined rebounds and five steals are nice -- so it's safe to say Warren is a one-dimension player for the most part. However, the Suns need that dimension, and he has played 30-plus minutes in each of the first two games this season. Warren has averaged 19.4 points, 5.1 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game in 10 career games with at least 30 minutes played, so you should be able to expect some nice production in his current role.
The days of Lawson producing at a borderline All-Star level are probably gone. The soon-to-be 29-year-old certainly seems to have lost a step or two since his Denver days. Still, he provided a bit of value for the Pacers late last season, and should continue to do so for the Kings at least through the end of this week with Darren Collison still suspended. Lawson averaged 8.0 points and 7.0 assists per game in the first three games for the Kings, and will remain the starter for the next five games. All five games are set to come in Fantasy Week 2 (Oct. 31-Nov. 6), which makes him a must-add and must-start player for this week. His value beyond this week is much murkier, but he might be able to carve out long-term value if he plays well.
Rodriguez's 76ers' debut was an impressive one. In 32 minutes, he dished out nine assists without a turnover, while throwing in 12 points on solid shooting to boot. His encore was a bit less impressive, but still encouraging for Fantasy purposes, as he now has 14 assists with just four turnovers through his first two games. With their fast pace, we've identified the 76ers' point guard position as a nice value for Fantasy players for years, even if the talent hasn't always allowed that to come true. Rodriguez isn't a great player, but he is probably a competent one, and as Ish Smith proved last season, competence is all you need to have Fantasy value in this offense. The opportunity is there, and that's as important as anything here.
Speaking of one-dimensional scorers, Bogdanovic really isn't on an NBA floor for any reason but to shoot. Good thing he's pretty good at it, nailing five 3-pointers in his first three games this season, while averaging 17.0 points per game for the Nets. With Brook Lopez limited, the Nets need scoring anywhere they can get it and, as Bogdanovic showed last season -- 15.1 points, 2.2 3-pointers per game after the All-Star break -- he can provide that in bunches. He might have been overlooked on Draft Day.
Another player who has a real opportunity here is Ennis, who has logged big minutes on the wing for the Grizzlies in the early going. With Chandler Parsons still not cleared to play, he has averaged 15.5 points and 5.0 rebounds in 27.5 minutes per game in the first two games of the season, and should continue to see plenty of minutes as long as Parsons remains out. That may not be long -- he could be cleared to play sometime this week -- but the Grizzlies are already riddled with injuries up and down the roster, so there should be opportunities for Ennis. At the very least, he looks like a nice Week 2 fill-in, with four games on the schedule.
Cut 'Em Loose
Given the presence of two dynamic playmaking guards, the Blazers' decision to sign Evan Turner was one of the more confusing moves any team made this season. He has been a predictably awkward fit through three games, scoring just 6.0 points per game, and also providing little in the way of playmaking. His primary source of value over the previous two seasons was his ability to provide a cheap source of assists as the Celtics' primary creator with the second unit, but it's a lot harder to get excited about Turner when he is providing fewer than three assists per game. After averaging 55.8 touches per game for the Celtics last season, he is down to 40 in his first three with the Blazers, and his minutes are down too. Maybe Turner turns things around and starts dishing out more dimes, but I'm not sure the upside is high enough to wait on here.
It's been hard to get excited about Parker over the last few years, as his production has slipped in each of the last five seasons. He hasn't shown much signs of turning things around in the early going, scoring just 13 points on 4 of 15 shooting in the first two games, and he is clearly both on the downswing of his career and no longer a focal point for the Spurs. Parker is, at this point in his impressive career, a fringe Fantasy option, and he didn't even produce enough to justify a place in your starting lineup when the Spurs had four games on the schedule in Week 1 -- thanks to a DNP Saturday, of course. He is waiver-wire fodder.
