Indian soccer player dies following tragic goal celebration
Peter Biaksangzuala suffered serious injuries to his spinal cord following a goal celebration last week, and he passed away on Sunday.
A soccer player in India died Sunday after injuring himself while celebrating a goal earlier last week in the Mizoram Premier League.
Peter Biaksangzuala, a 23-year-old midfielder on Bethlehem Vengthlang, scored against Chanmari West FC but he landed awkwardly after attempting several somersaults and suffered serious spinal cord damage. Here's video of the accident. Viewer discretion is advised.
After scoring a 62nd-minute goal on Tuesday, Biaksangzuala attemped the acrobatic celebration reportedly in honor of Germany's Miroslav Klose, who performed a similar celebration at the World Cup. Biaksangzuala's teammates rushed to him after he fell, and he was immediately taken to an intensive care unit at Aizawl Civil Hospital. He was there for five days before his death.
The league released a lengthy statement in his honor.
"Peter was a defensive midfielder who had always been aggressive and hard working, a true team player. Like most defensive midfielders, he was excellent at reading the game, breaking up attacks and protecting his defenders. ... A CT scan was taken right after he was taken to the hospital and the result showed that the injury inflicted on his spinal cord was quite serious. The doctors did their best to help him fight for his life. ... Heaven has gained a defensive midfielder; apart from the hard tackles and the breaking up of attacks, goal celebrations will never be painful anymore. Goodbye Peter."
