According to an ESPN report, the Fight of the Century will generate more $13.2 million via sponsors.
Add another record to the Fight of the Century's running tally. And this record, like many of the others, involves money.
According to a report published by ESPN, the fight featuring Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao will break the record for most money generated by sponsors. ESPN spoke with Todd duBoef, the President of Top Rank, who told them that $13.2 million will be generated by the five title sponsors.
"We killed it," Lucia McKelvey, Top Rank's executive vice president of marketing, told ESPN. "We blew it out of the water."
ESPN reported in their article that the previous sponsorship record is roughly $3.5 million to $4 million, so this record will easily top the previous mark.
Tecate, the largest of all the sponsors, contributed $5.6 million to be the official beer of the Fight of the Century. In addition to having its beer sold at the MGM Grand on May 2, its logo will also be plastered inside the ring.
"It is like the Super Bowl of boxing -- a gigantic sporting event," Gustavo Guerra, Tecate's brand director, told ESPN. "It's good for us. It's about credibility. We cannot have the luxury of being out of this fight. This is very important for us."
For $5.6 million, it better have been important.
